Question for Glock owners.

I was cleaning my new G19 and I took the barrel out. I noticed that the firing pin was protruding. That doesn't seem right to me. It seems like it should be behind the internal safety. Seems like that could lead to a discharge if one is in the chamber. A little help guys? Is this how yours are?

Firing pin

My 34 firing pin sticks out until I chamber a round.

In order to field strip the pistol, you must dry fire it first. When you dry fire, of course the firing pin will protrude from the breechface because it must strike the cartridge primer when firing a round. If it DIDN'T protrude, you should be worried. Furthermore, you can test the FP safety by pushing the FP back into the breechface. Once it tucks back into its home, it will click behind the FP safety, and will not come out again unless you depress the round FP safety button while you move the FP forward.

Next time:
1. Put the UNLOADED gun back together. Ammo is no where around.
2. Cycle the slide.
3. Point it at a safe direction and dry fire.
4. Slowly cycle the slide less than 1/8th and peek into the chamber opening; notice the firing pin?
5. Continue to slowly cyle and the firing pin will disappear; ready to be on safe action mode--until you disengage the safety by pulling the trigger.
6. Enjoy your Glock.

The striker should retract when you rack the slide, when ever the trigger is at its rearmost position, the striker will protrude.

If you don't want it sticking out while you're cleaning the gun around that area, just pull back on the striker a bit and it will click back into place. After that happens, it cannot protrude again unless the striker safety is depressed; that metal circle near that area.
