    Looking for a revolver

    Hey everyone

Im looking for a handgun for my brother. He's not new to firearms, but this would be his first handgun. Ive taken him to the range, and we shot two guns a 9mm glock, and a sig gsr. Out of those two he preferred the 1911 style, but what he tells me he'd like would be to own a revolver. Personally im not to familiar with revolvers, the only one ive shot more than once would be a SAA, and hes not really into that old style of shooting. He doesnt even like my 1911 cause its almost 100yrs old. Anyways long story short im looking for a cheap, reliable, modern, and preferably american made revolver.

at first i was looking at a makarov, and p225 cause i was trying to stay under a 400$ budget, but since he told me he would prefer a revolver, i came here to see if a good revolver for the same price could be found.

heres some eye candy, of the style he likes, only thing else im worried about it ammo costs

    thanks for any advice

Ruger G100 or Smith and Wesson 686 models in 4" barrel .357 mag are great options, the Ruger is likely closer to the price point you are hoping to find.

Should be able to find a nice S&W or Ruger .357 for that budget. Have him check out the used forums to find a model he likes. .357 is an excellent choice as he can shoot either .38 or .357, and the ammo is not too expensive.

Most top breaks will be old western styles/ unless you wanna find a Webley.

Here's a weird one... the Webley Fosbery Automatic Revolver

Ruger GP100. I have one in 6". Built like a tank and will last a few lifetimes. The thing you should know about the 686 is that all the newer models have internal locks built into the gun. I'm sure 95% of the time it'll never be a problem, but there's already been enough reports on forums of their revolvers locking up when shooting hotter loads with the 686.

Aside from that, there are Tauruses.. I don't have experience in em, but they are hit or miss. People either get perfect models and love em, or they get duds.

You should do a search, there are hundreds of posts on these 3 main revolvers.

I used to own a Tracker in 357. Loved it. 7 shots, ported barrel, cheaper than the other brands and dead accurate.

+1 on the Ruger GP100 I have a 4" stainless, great gun. I would suggest going to a gun store and have him handle a couple different ones see what he likes and then go to a range and if they have what he likes shoot them so he knows what their like. After that unless he wants brand new you can check out the for sale section here and save a few dollars. This is my GP, Redhemi

The Ruger GP100 is the best value in terms of quality and reliability. It's not as pretty as a smith, but it's heavier. I also find the grips much more comfortable.

And yeah, I hear you on the break tops. My only issue with them is that most of them are in fairly expensive calibers and I don't reload.

Yeah I've shot a S&W before, but I'm gonna try and find a range that has a gp100, since alot of you are recomending it.

And thanks rekrab it's nice to know I'm not the only one who likes them lol. But yeah i wanna take a class on reloading since my handgun eats expensive ammo, I got to use to spending 20 for 500 rounds, now it's that much for 50 :/

Don't forget the Ruger SP101. I went with it over the GP100, a bit more concealable if I have to and just as reliable. It's my favorite gun to shoot. Ammo is not too hard to find, but I see more 357 than I do 38

                              +1 on the Ruger.

On a personal level I own and love the Smith, a lot of folks will tell you that the 686 is a good candidate for best revolver ever made. However you're not finding one for $400 unless you hang around a lot of gun auctions, and even then... not a sure thing.

The Ruger is heavily built, dead nuts reliable, and time tested, for a lot less money, I don't imagine you'd be disappointed with it at all.
