    1911 holster

I just picked up a SA 1911 loaded and have been researching holsters for camping/BLM open carry so it will have to retain the pistol well. I'm pretty much set on getting a leather holster. But am completely lost on which one to get. I don't want to spend much more than $70.

Why is it that some holsters don't have a thumb break? Do they retain the pistol well?

What should I look for in a gun belt? do I really need one?

I want to keep this rig under $100.

I was looking at something along the lines of these, but am open to suggestions.

    Thanks.

do i understand you correctly that you're willing to spend $70 on a holster, but only $30 on a belt?

you might consider spending as much on a belt as on the holster, it has more to do with supporting the gun on your belt.

i would suggest you that a look at the Wilderness Instructor's belt as a good basis for any carry system. if you prefer leather, i'd suggest you take a look at Beltman's selections.

my open carry choice is the Blackhawk CQC Serpa paddle, so i'll let others chime in on holster selection. my choices in leather would usually run a bit over your budget

For camping/outdoors I would definatly look at the serpa. The NRA store online has a good deal on them.

I can recommend the Blackhawk Serpa holster. I really like the way the 1911 is secured in the holster. Not a bad price either.

I had originally planned on getting the serpa but I've heard that they can cause an ND.

two things have to occur before this can happen, you don't follow the directions of how to activate the release and you don't know the difference between the terms "press against" and "push in".

your odds go up if you're using a glock

I've read about this as well. From what I can gather they have one ND due to user error but no AD's due to bad design. When un-holstering any weapon due care is needed.

Yeah that's what I figured too but don't really want to risk it.

You'll need a good belt since the 1911 is a heavy gun.

I went with a Milt Sparks VMII for my full size and a Milt Sparks Summer Special for my Commander size. Both are excellent holsters. I also went with a Beltman belt.
