    Do I have to register?

I am a Marine from Colorado, which is where most of my pistols are. If I want to sell a pistol to a CA resident, do I need to register it here first?

I am legally allowed to purchase weapons here because I am stationed at CP.

    Thanks.

Hello Marine.... thank you for your service.

You do not have to register the gun.

If you are going to sell it by mail from one ffl to another, it must be on the California safe gun list.

    *Can someone pls confirm that*

You moved from Co to Ca, I guess, since you can purchase firearms here, and you are supposed to register it using the http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/ab991frm.pdf

      I think.

I am moving into California and I own several handguns. What are the new-resident registration requirements?

You are considered to be a personal handgun importer as defined by California law. You may bring all of your otherwise California-legal firearms with you, but you must report all of your handguns to the DOJ within 60 days as required utilizing the New Resident Handgun Ownership Report. PDF logo [PDF 518 kb / 2 pg] You are not required to report rifles or shotguns. You may not bring ammunition feeding devices with a capacity greater than ten rounds, machineguns, or assault weapons into California.

      (PC sections 12001(n), 12072(f)(2))

I think you are good to go. Keep in mind a handgun transfer must process through a CA dealer.

Since you are stationed at Camp Pendelton, your military ID should work. Might bring a copy of your orders assigning you to CP.

It does not have to be on the roster since you are self importing from another state and will sell it as a Private Party Transfer (PPT).

+1 on thank you for your service.

If he is moving here due to military orders he is exempt from registering them .

You do not need to register your handguns, but will need to bring your military ID and a copy of your PCS orders when going to sell it through a dealer.

Once you are discharged however and remain in CA the clock starts and you must register them.

Yup, roster is not an issue. Just no handgun AW's or large-capacity magazines.

He can perhaps try and get an Military Assualt Weapons permit for the duration of his stay.

He is the same as any other person coming here from another state. He however is exempt from the 60 day registration due to him being here on armed service duty. That exempts him from being a 'personal handgun importer' and the registration until he is discharged. See 12001.

Again, no handguns AW's. See the handgun flowchart for more info.

I had a similar situation, I was the buyer and the FFLs I tried to use for the PPT wouldn't do it until the new resident seller got a hard copy (with photo) CA drivers license.
