    DOJ list question

    Hi,

I have a question about the CA approved firearms list.
The list has a "01091 M1991A1 Ser 80 / Stainless Steel (matte) " on it.

I'm looking at a stainless steel Series 80 M1991A1 Colt pistol with the model number "01091Z". Is it legal to bring this gun into CA?

    Thanks,
    David

I am unclear as to your phrase, "...bring this gun to California."

If you are an out-of-state resident MOVING to California, yes, you are allowed to bring in 'off-list' handguns. You have 60 days to fill out reg form with DOJ and pay a small reg fee for your handguns. (Rifles don't need to be reg'd this way, and you cannot bring in anything considered an 'assault weapon'.)

If you are a CA resident already, you are implying that you, thru a CA FFL dealer, are importing this gun into CA - which CANNOT be done. You MUST use an CA FFL dealer to acquire most firearms to satisfy both CA and BATF. The FFL dealer will check the list if it is an 'approved' gun and will not transfer it to you if not.

Model #'s are important even if gun is identical appearance/function/form to one on the list.

If you really want this particular model of gun, the only ways for you to get it are to find a CA owner who already has one, and do a 'PPT' (private party transfer) mediated by a CA FFL. Both of you, buyer and seller, have to show up and the FFL dealer location. The other way is to 'move' out of state, get new ID, buy the gun, and 'move' back into CA again (and reg the gun within 60 days of moving back in).
