    My First Handgun

I finaly made my first handgun purchase. Sig P229 .40 S & W, Equinox. I have been looking and renting for several months but I kept coming back to the Equinox. It fits my hand the best and it is one beautiful piece of equipment. Now all I have to do is wait out the next ten days.

I didn't realize how bad the ten days was... until I realized I was out of town for it and had to wait another 4 days...

You didn't mess around with your "first handgun"! I just picked up a bone stock 229 as my second "real" handgun. But I have 5 others in the 380 or smaller category. I almost regret not spending the extra couple hundred bucks when I bought my first HD weapon and got the Sig then. It is a superior handgun!

                Congrats! Welcome to the club.

Here are some great safety rules from the NRA:

                1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
This is the primary rule of gun safety. A safe direction means that the gun is pointed so that even if it were to go off it would not cause injury or damage. The key to this rule is to control where the muzzle or front end of the barrel is pointed at all times. Common sense dictates the safest direction, depending on different circumstances.

                2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
When holding a gun, rest your finger on the trigger guard or along the side of the gun. Until you are actually ready to fire, do not touch the trigger.

                3. ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
Whenever you pick up a gun, immediately engage the safety device if possible, and, if the gun has a magazine, remove it before opening the action and looking into the chamber(s) which should be clear of ammunition. If you do not know how to open the action or inspect the chamber(s), leave the gun alone and get help from someone who does.

                  imtheomrgaman,

Thank you for the great advise, I have been around fire arms all my life. Grandfather, Father, Brother, Uncles, BSA, NRA, Hunters Safety. I have waited until my youngest children are in their Teens before making a handgun purchase. When I was a very young boy my uncle laid into me for not treating a gun as a loaded weapon at all times. When I was 5 my best friend was shot by is drunken father playing cops and robbers with his 22 revolver. I still remember the ambulance arriving today, luckily he lived.

                  Thank you again,

                  Scott
