Last night I took my Steyr M40 out of jail. I had some time to put 90 rounds downrange. I used fiochhi 170gr FMJ, and some of the range reloads.
To qualify, i'm not a great shooter at all. So at 25 feet I was surprised I hit 2 out of 10 aiming at a tennis ball. I played around with the tennis ball for a few rounds.
The recoil is a sharp impulse directly to the rear. It felt less "bang" up or to the side than the glock or XD40 I shot. The Steyr M grip is allows my web of the palm to be close to the bore axis. The ergonomics kept everything very manageable as I feel like my hand is more inside the gun.
After 50 rounds I switched out to 20 feet and a slow pistol target. Using the big triangular frontsight, my first shot was in the center ten area. I was so surprised I changed my grip and the rest of the shots were jerky low and to the left. My poor form to thank for that. Every fresh target I got 2-4 shots in the 9 and 10 area.
So the big triangular sight is is very fast to lock in. It's easier for me, a new shooter, than the normal 3 dot. One funny thing is my Steyr M40 sometimes ejected casings straight back and up on a 45 degree angle. This was pretty funny as I had about 25% of the casings either hit me in the forehead or hit the ceiling and bounce on my head. The mags drop free and aren't as hard to load as a Glock i'm used to.
Overall, the Steyr M40-A1 shoots much better than I can. I love it.
