    Can anyone identify S&W .38 ??

    Here is what I know...

It's a .38 special, stainless steel, snub nose probably 1.8 or 2 inches, wooden grip, the hammer is mostly hidden.

There is a stamp on the bottom BPC6538.

Photo Attached. Any help would be great.

    I believe it's a 649 - a stainless version of the model 49

Sweet... We found this with my Grandfathers old stuff.... Do older guns like this sell? Or do you think I should keep it? Maybe put a nice comfortable rubber grip or something..

Certainly they sell. Model is called the Bodyguard. They have been made is several variations over the years. Blue steel for the 49, Stainless for the 649, Blued alum alloy and steel as the model 38 and alloy and stainless as the 638.

The shrouded hammer is to keep it from catching on clothing when carried concealed. Doubt it would have been shot much, as these guns spend most of their life carried or in a drawer. Probably worth $450-500 if in very good condition. The alloy models are preferred for carry purposes as they are lighter, and bring slightly higher prices.

It's in pretty good condition, no rust that I can see... and I think he used to wear this because it came with this holster that I tried on and it's easy to conceal.... I dunno if I wanna sell it now

Am I allowed to sell Ammo? we found a ton of that too

Yes, you are allowed to sell ammo. But, only to me!

There are no legal restrictions on ammo sales (private party).

Do yourself a favor. DO NOT SELL THAT GUN!!! If you look through the threads here, you will see pages and pages of people bemoaning the fact that they sold X, Y, or Z. It was your grandfathers. Keep it and pass it on to your kids some day. It isn't worth a fortune, but it is irreplacable to you and your family.

I just bought one of those this year for my wife do yourself and keep it as all the new ones have a phony trigger lock installed on them and they are a very desirable CCW gun. I would put the pachmayr grips on it and keep the wooden ones for later purposes. Nice gun btw.

Absolutely, sell grandad's revolver, 100% someday you'll regret it. Get $400 today, ten years from now you'd pay $4000 to get it back.
