    Colt Gvt Series 70

I'm accompanying a friend to the gun store where he is going to consign what he describes as a "nearly never used" Colt 1911 Government model Series 70. Factory grips and fixed sights, no box. He's asking me what he should put it up for, I'm not too current on my Colt 1911 values - my guesswork is $700.00. Is that about right?

This isn't a firesale situation, so having it sit a bit is no problem. I don't want to advise too high & have it sit forever, nor do I want to go too low. But if he sells it for $700.00 and someone later says "Hey, I'd have paid $900.00 for it I'll be springing for free lunch at Palomino's or the Palace for the next month.

I would go maybe $900.00.If it sits a while, you can always come down.I saw one recently sell for $850.00 very fast. Those are great guns and they don't make them anymore....

you can always adjust the price lower if it sits. But I'll say $800. OTD price of $899.

          Higher

I think $700 is a little low for an unused series 70 Colt. The series 70 are more highly prized than the series 80 because they lack the internal safety that is activated by the trigger. I would try for $850 or $900.

He can post the sell in Private firearms Sales forum and he can save the dealer's charge. If he is in bay area. I'm interested.

If he posts it for sale in the forum for $700, and it's minty, it'll go in 5 minutes.

              Hell, I might be interested!

Offer it here for $900- $1000, and drop the price $50 every week until it sells.

I've sold several guns in the last year.I think $700 is too low.Start at $900,go to $850 if it sits.Colts usually move fast.

                  Therefore you should ask $1000

$700 is under priced to the point of being a steal. It's a fire sale price, really. I moved a very lightly used Series 70 with improvements by Richard Heinie recently on the for sale forum for more than that.

+1...put it on the for sale forum for $900 or so, and avoid the dealer's cut for consignment.

Thanks for the info and I have to apologize - got my hands on the gun and it's a Mk IV 80 Series. It's in great shape but he evidently took "Series 70" to mean any old 1911.

I guess the "Series 80" roll stamp wasn't enough of a hint.
