Safe to shoot?

When my grandfather passed in ~94 my father got some of his handguns. So my Q is for the pistol in the pictures below. Is there anything I can look for to determine if it's safe to fire or do I need to take it to a smith?

The wise decision would be to take it to a knowledgable gunsmith who should be able to tell you whether it is safe to fire, or if it is in need or repairs.

That's what I figured.. just noticed i forgot to ask my second Q. Where's a good smith in the East Bay?

i cant see the picture very well, but i think i see some rust on the extractor. i would definetly follow blka4alb's advise. if the thing has even been sitting around since 94 (13 years) i would take it based on that alone. and the gun pictured here looks a bit worn on top of that. hope it still works though. good luck
