Good luck finding them. These are getting super hard to find. I only know of a M9-A1 for sale, but no .40s.

They are getting really difficult to find... especially since the company stopped importing them around March '09! This January I scoured most of SoCal from Santa Barbara to San Diego and couldn't find a store that had one. Even many big stores from other states seem to be out.

I recently got lucky and found a good deal on an M40-A1 on gunbroker.com, that's probably your best bet... Sometimes they're a bit pricey, but good deals usually appear with time.

Where did find it?

No shop will get them now. They stop import last year CDNN and Dunn's has the last shipment from Steyr. Try your luck on gunbroker or your local consignment.

Just fyi, it's a sweet compact pistol. I wish I have one in 9 as well.

Description says "Not for sale in CA" because this one is the old pre-2004 M40, which is not on the roster.

I find it interesting the the safe gun list was updated and extended 4 Steyr Arms handguns to 1/2011. Why would they pay for another year if they were not importing them anymore.

Steyr USA announced in January 2009 they were stopping the importation of handguns, because of the strong Euro. They bought the pistols from Steyr in Austria in Euros, but with a weaker dollar, made them too expensive to be able to meet the price point they could sell the pistols for in the US.

Steyr USA said they would resume importing pistols again, once the US$$ gains strength against the Euro. The US$ vs Euro exchange rate is still pretty lousy.

Steyr M pistols do not have a mag disconnect, so if it was to expire off the roster, it would never be able to be resubmitted for roster testing ever again, as per new CA mag disconnect & loaded chamber indicator requirements.

It was new in box $499 from transfer from Norwalk. Something like 580 out the door, and that compared to the Glock 22 (i think this is 40 model) at $599. I saw the box, and nobody's used it before.
