Thinking about my first Sig purchase...

    Hello all,

I have been thinking lately about the Sig line of pistols and am contemplating my venture into the Sig world. I currently own a Kimber custom stainless, Glock 35, a Bulgarian Makarov, and a Remington Army Blackpowder. I have thought about Sigs before but after a horrible range session with a P229 (found it hard to control recoil, poor groups, bad ergonomics for me, etc.), I never considered them again.

Now that I am more proficient with firearms and actually know what I am doing, I am again intrigued with the idea of owning a Sig. I have small - medium size hands and so the 1911 grip has always been good for me, and this is why I am considering my first Sig to be either the P225 P6, or the P245, either of which would be fine though the P245 grip is a bit short for me. I don't want to break the bank on my first Sig in case I really still don't like it and I need to sell it, so the P6 is very enticing right now since very clean examples of these can still be purchased for roughly around $450.00.

What do you guys think? I am going more regularly to my indoor range now and am shooting their Sig loaners more and finding that they are not bad, but I still don't like the double stacked grip. My only reservation with the P6 is that if I ever want to make it anything but a range pistol (i.e. use it for tactical handgun class), the choices of aftermarket grips, sights (not sure about this one), and holsters are limited. Would the P6 be a good first Sig to own?

    Thanks much!

      Consider a used Sig P228

Personally I would get a used P228, the double stack 9mm model, rather than one of the used German police P225s that are common on the market now. The used P228 might cost $550, compared to $450 for the surplus P225, but it would probably have a better finish and has considerably higher capacity without much increase in grip width. The height and length dimensions are about the same between the two guns. I think the P228 would hold value better, as they are not being sold in used condition by police agencies.

Here is a used P228 currently on Gunbroker for $550:

Since you can only have 10 round mags there's not much point to getting a P228, especially if you didn't find the P229 comfortable. The frames are almost identicle.

I'd say get a .45 ACP P220 like the other guy said. It's a single stack and will handle far better than the short P245. Plus they are seriously accurate.

Here's the all stainless model, nice and heavy to keep the recoil down:

I have definitely also considered the new P220 Single Action Only models, and have been drooling over the Elite models... Too bad they are up there in price and not certified for sale here...
I might just have to save longer for a P220... I believe my indoor range has one for loan, I will definitely try it out if they do.

What do you plan on using it for? Target shooting or CCW? Here is what I picked up today after waiting 11 days.

Don't know when or who's P229 you shot, but I have a P229 (9X19) purchased about a year ago and its one of the best pistols I have ever owned. Its a pure gem!

My vote goes for the P229 in 40S&W. I have small hands as well and it provides the larger round in a compact versus the P226 fullsize.

I just picked up a P225/P6 and must say that even though I feel comfortable with a 226, this feels really, really nice. If you have smaller hands it's just about perfect.

Nice P220ST. Just curious why you chose one with the "old rail". You realize you can't mount any accessories to that type of rail, right?

No particular reason except it was available and for a decent price. I sorta like the way it looks though. Don't plan on putting anything on the Sig anyways as I have a few other pistols for mountable accessories that have more round capacity.

I plan to use the Sig the same way with all my other guns, which is 90% indoor/outdoor range sessions, and the other 10% for tactical pistol classes and the like. Am thinking about talking my local indoor range into running small competitions again like they used to in the old days (under different management). If I succeed, then I will squeeze in 5% out of the remaining 10% for local competitions.

By the way... the P225 is currently on the certified list, but is the P225 P6 still considered a P225 and thus certified to be purchased in California?

If you were to own only one Sig, it's got to be a P229.
