They were fairly low volume in sales in US, and I believe they've been out of production for some time - so you're not gonna see too many around.
In CA, the only ways you'll find one are via someone doing a PPT with you, or finding one on consignment sale.

Neat gun, somewhat rare but they come up for sale in shops and boards from time to time. Grip really wide at the top but otherwise pretty user friendly. Not for small hands or budgets but a must have for a Walther collection.Comment

In my opinion the P88 was the last of the real Walthers, before Umarex got involved. The P88 is a handfull, the pistol is designed to be completely ambidextrous as well. Not an easy pistol to find mags for in Cali.Comment

The P88 is the full-size, the P88C was the compact.
From what I've read, the compact didn't get great reviews.
I have a P88, and I absolutely love it.
The grip is fairly fat, but IMHO the ergos are really nice. No manual safety, and all controls save for the slide stop (not slide release) are ambi.
Its very accurate, some have said one of the most accurate of the "wonder nines". The barrel has conventional rifling.
One reason they weren't so proliferate was because they were pretty expensive when they came out. Take off the plastic grip plates to see why; the controls are via nice precision linkages.
There are walnut grip plates available for them, with and without thumbrests.
The walnut grip panels and various holsters are available from Earl's Repair Service:
