For years the only pistols that I have owned are polymar pistols...usp's,glocks, and M&P's. But with all of the hype that I have read about 1911's over the years I decided to pick one up. I got a Kimber TLEII. Im probably going to offend some people here but I dont get what is so good about 1911's. I have never had a harder time, disassembling/reassembling a handgun in my life much less the fact that it only has 7rnd mags. Im not trying to hurt anyones feelings but could someone explain to me why the 1911 is what it is cause I think Im missing something???

1911 WTF?

Want to sell it for $700?
Pretty sure the "hype/hysteria" you were reading about is from people who swear that gun is the greatest firearm ever made. It's a trench gun. Does the job, goes bang every time and looks good. Now as far as cleaning.....that will make you not want to shoot it. I bought one and didn't COMPLETLY realize how much work it was to take apart however I love mine since I shoot it pretty well when I take it out. I have my M&P and prefer to shoot that but the grips on the 1911 work better than the polymer when my hand starts to sweat.
If you really want I just might consider trading my M&P for your 1911.....and that's a SERIOUS trade because I'd NEVER get rid of my M&P. -
Yep, you didn't go all out for the Colt.
When you buy a Colt, the clouds open up and a ray of sunshine pokes through and the shining
Ghost of JMB comes down to stand at your side to guide you while field stripping your Colt.
He even points in the direction that the guiding rod plug flies off to when you slip and it goes sailing!
The experience makes one a Colt Disciple Forever.Last edited by Beelzy; 02-14-2010, 9:24 AM."I kill things for a living, don't make yourself one of them"Comment

What's so good about it is the way they shoot and fit the hand, and the perfect trigger. If you hadn't chosen a version with a full length guide rod you wouldn't have had disassembly hassles. Pick up a Cylinder & Slide bushing wrench or a GI style guide rod and plug and it won't be a hassle. If you can walk and chew gum you can disassemble and clean a 1911 with a GI guide rod.Last edited by sholling; 02-14-2010, 9:26 AM."Government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else." --FREDERIC BASTIAT--

I like 1911s for one main reason.. "Tunability" if thats a word lol. The 1911 has a lot more precises tuning options than most other pistols.. specifically the trigger. That aside, they feel perfect in my hand, they're reliable work horses, and I find them to be beautiful firearms. For me its the perfect sidearm. Different strokes for different folks though.. its all about what you like.
For me, Sigs are the only thing close. Not that I don't like other guns, but when it really comes down to it, most other guns have "Downsides" that I don't see in the 1911."Everybody is a genius. All of my 1911 mags are 8 rounders. That said, If I can't hit my target within the first 9 rounds, I shouldn't have been shooting at it. I only have two tuperware guns and I really don't like them. I've got short fingers so, the single stack mag of the 1911 is much better for me. I don't have any problems cleaning or disassembling any of my 1911s. It sounds to me that you are just used to your plastic and feel that you need a gun to have enough ammo to fight an army. I find that round capacity is only an issue for those shooting competitively and those who aren't confident in their abilities. If you really think that you might need more than 8+1 rounds (between reloads) in a self defense situation, you probably should have had enough situational awareness to not allow yourself to be in that situation in the first place. There is a reason that Kimbers where not available to civilians during the beginning of our going into Iraq. Many officers ordered them because they did not want to carry the Berrettas with 15 round mags. Of course, the choices of our armed services personel who were going into combat should be an indication of something. Double-check the walk/gum thing above.

8-rounders have been available via Colt (as well as a bizillion other sellers) for years. Look around

No one here is offended 'cause you can't figure out the 1911. A little reading should fix that...no shortage of 1911 knowledge on the interweb.

Keep in mind that this gun was designed and adopted by the US millitary in 1911. That's 99 years ago.
When a gun has been around that long and not considered a relic it's not hype it's proven performance.
Plus it was designed by John Moses Browning the most prolific gun designer in the US if not the world.
I'm not a 1911 guy per se but I can understand the following. It's a piece of history you can hold in your hand.
Plus, who doesn't like 45 auto? And yes, the trigger can be tuned to be match quality.
Like the M1, and M-14 the Govt put a bunch of time and money into making these things shoot really well for competition and there's a bunch of info on how to do it.

I went to the range yesterday to provide some gun training for my parents and oldest son. I brought all sorts of guns there to explain to them the difference between SA vs DA, Glock DA vs Sig DA, no safety levers vs safety levers. My dad liked the fact the 1911 format Para/STI custom pistol was simple to use. The best trigger out of all the guns, rack the slide to chamber a round, and safety on it's ready, and fast to deploy. I'm not trying to start a 1911 vs (put your favorite pistol here) thread, just repeating what a person that doesn't shoot much said. The wise man said just find your place

IMO I think it's a bit nostalgia and owning a bit of history. I have only one 1911 and it's a Springfield GI 45. Took me about 2 times following the instruction book on disassembling it but after that I think it's pretty easy. For me I love the 1911. For me I think it's well balanced and since it's a single stack it fit's my hands very well. As far as the issue with round capacity, mine will hold 7 + 1, I think if I can't hit and take down my target within 8 rounds I need ALOT more practice at the range.Ray
