1911 Slide Stuck Open - Help!

Hey Gents,

Well, I must be the dumbest or the most unlucky SOB around. I just picked up my Springfield 1911 and was disassembling when the slide got stuck. I had just pulled out the recoil spring plug and the slide stop when I tilted the gun up and the slide slid back. Now the slide is stuck open and will not slide forward. The slide does not move at all. I tried to force it forward with no luck. Has anyone run into the same problem? Please help.

hm, looks like all you need to do is force it forward, just a little 'umph', but too much and its still stuck then im not sure

pull out recoil spring (should easily pull out from front according to pic, shake a lil while pulling forward, could be that the rod inside is out of place a tiny bit)

Springfield quality strikes again........(sorry, couldn't resist) Shim it properly in a vise and strike it on the rear of the slide with a non marring (nylon?) hammer. Be careful with the vise but hold it firmly. The other option is to send it back for repair and a proper slide to frame refit.

Will the barrel wiggle at all? The barrel feet or link may have hit bottom and the upper lugs are wedge tightly on the top of the inside area of slide. Basically the barrel is wedged. Try wiggling the barrel while bumping the slide forward. If the barrel wiggles and is not wedged in the slide, then see if the disconnector popped all the way up blocking the slide.

The barrel does not wiggle at all. The disconnector does look like its popped up more than my other 1911. If the disconnector is popped all the way up, how do I fix it?

could it be that the ILS was engaged? Perhaps it moved to the 'locked' position when the slide went back? not sure if it is it tho, i know when its engaged the slide cannot be 'racked'

The ILS locks the mainspring plunger so the hammer cannot be cocked. That's why the slide cannot be racked. The hammer is cocked, so it's not the ILS.

The same thing happened to my Dan Wesson 1911. I used a rubber mallet and tap it lightly from the rear and problem solved.

Most likely what happened is the barrel link dropped down when you pulled the slide stop out and when you tried to pull it forward with the slide it got wedged against the frame. since you are pulling it forward, the link doesn't have any more space to swing because the frame is stopping it. Try turning the gun upside down, pushing the barrel/slide backwards towards the hammer, then pulling it forwards. If that doesn't work, try it again but with help from a rubber or plastic mallet.

Problem solved. I was pretty apprehensive to taking a mallet to my brand new 1911, but it worked. I appreciate the help from all of you.

Problem solved. I was pretty apprehensive to taking a mallet to my brand new 1911, but it worked. I appreciate the help from all of you.

you know, when ever you take a mallet to q 1911, it's totaled and is extremely dangerous to fire.
