I haven't heard great things about the pistol DVDs. So I've held off on purchasing them.If it was a snake, it would have bit me.

Yeah, a little too much coffee. Ease off the throttle. The 'nets is full of opinions you are not going to agree with. Haven't had a chance to watch the handgun one, but the carbine one is great. Very relevant and helpful. They probably spent a lot of time on the basics.
99.9% of handgun owners don't know crap about the handguns they own or how to shoot them. So any training DVD is gonna be pretty much focused on the stuff people should already know, but don't. Perhaps you are one of those people who does not realize what it takes to become proficient and thus the repetitive drills needed to acquire proficiency in real life scenarios look boring to you. They can be, but they are necessary.
I won't know for sure until I watch the DVD. So I am reserving judgment. Its just the carbine DVD was really great, so I find it hard to believe the handgun one would be crap. Since most people don't crap about how to train properly, so it's usually a safe bet to assume the problem is you, and not the DVD.
Most people go to a 25 yard range, plink away, taking their time between shots, never working from a holster or concealment, and break every safety rule there is every five seconds, and continually endanger themselves and others all the while completely oblivious they are doing anything wrong. Since its all I ever see out there on the range, then mathematically its a safe bet you're one of them. But since I've never seen you shoot, I have to reserve judgment there as well.
Now, that said. I'm no super stud. I am fully aware of how much I need to improve, and know exactly where my skill level is at. I know exactly what I need to do become a super stud, and a lot of that stuff is boring as hell. Dry practice is boring. Trigger control drills are boring. Repeating each step in your drills over and over again until you are doing it flawlessly, then doing them some more is boring. However, that boring stuff is the only way to get good. That's life.
What won't be boring will be surviving a gun fight if fate puts me in that unfortunate circumstance.Last edited by tacticalcity; 03-11-2010, 5:07 PM.Comment

Didn't watch it in one sitting that is for sure and I didn't watch it in order either. It isn't a movie or a tv show, its a training video and as far as training videos go I found it entertaining and informative to watch.
The parts I found informative were:
Approach to malfunctions: Different than I was taught and I liked the thought behind their approach.
BSA (balance of speed and accuracy): At least that is what they call it and I thought that drill can be incorporated into different weapon platforms as well.
Different CCW/Military/Police scenarios were interesting to watch. I think I learned most from the girls scenario and what she did than the others.
The little bits on how they instructed to operate with a wheel gun was also interesting for me since I don't use one.
Travis Haley's little talk about mind set and scanning was also informative as well.
In the end where they talk about gear, guns, etc.. was more informative than you would get on the interweb and it gave me more insight into their mind set. I agree 120% with Travis Haley and his thought on 1911's.
Those are the parts that I don't think I have been taught/told/read anywhere.
The most entertaining part was the outtakes but their shoot out in the end was kinda meh. I think they could have thought of something better to do than that.Comment
