SA Champion is excellent for the money, I 'd traded for something else but still missed it.

Jeff Cooper liked the LW Commander in .45acp and often carried one.

He felt the heavier Combat Commander was not beneficial; with a weight close to a Government Model one should should stay with a GM due to the longer sight radius, improved ballistics and lesser recoil.

I don't know that I agree totally with the Colonel; having owned Commanders of both persuasion for over 30 years I find the steel framed Commanders a lot of fun to shoot, the slide length seems right to me, and my Colt and DW variants have been extremely reliable.

I do have a 9mm Commander and its one of my favorite pistols; the lower recoil round works well with the lw frame.

In regard to durability, I think the most important factor is changing the recoil spring at regular intervals. I don't feed any of my 1911's a steady diet of +p's; I shoot several boxes of it through them to confirm feed and function reliability and carry +p's for defensive loads, but for range use I use standard pressure ammo.
"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
"What we get away with isn't usually the same as what's good for us"
"An extended slide stop is the second most useless part you can put on a 1911"

"While Ruger DA revolvers may be built like a tank, they have the aesthetics of one also,
although I suppose there are a few tanks which I owe an apology to for that remark"

          Dan Wesson CBOB (stainless)
          Nighthawk Talon II (steel)
Colt Commander, bobtail and custom by Chuck Rogers (stainless)

Shooting +p in aluminum Officer or Commander 1911s doesn't bother me or my wife. I think I'll be buying another aluminium 1911 this year, likely a bobtailed Commander size from Wilson or NHC, and see how we like it compared to the aluminum-framed Wilson CQB Compact (equipped and setup like the Bill Wilson Carry Pistol without the dumb looking signature in the slide) my wife has for a CCW piece.
