Thieves are the lowest form of life out there, except for liberal politicians, of course, but that's redundant. -
Going to the range is one of the few exceptions to the locked case requirement:Although whenever I head to the range the ammo is usually in a backpack or duffel bag and the guns are in another case locked and both are in the truck.
12027 (f) Members of any club or organization organized for the purpose
of practicing shooting at targets upon established target ranges,
whether public or private, while the members are using pistols,
revolvers, or other firearms capable of being concealed upon the
person upon the target ranges, or transporting these firearms
unloaded when going to and from the ranges.
(g) Licensed hunters or fishermen carrying pistols, revolvers, or
other firearms capable of being concealed upon the person while
engaged in hunting or fishing, or transporting those firearms
unloaded when going to or returning from the hunting or fishing
expedition.
I think the school zone law still applies in those cases however.
Also, locking glove compartments and center consoles are specifically NOT ok as locked cases.
Thanks to grizzlyguy for straightening me out on 12027.*REMOVE THIS PART BEFORE POSTING*Comment

I'd like to offer my own interpretation of those two provisions. Please note that the interpretation is not based on case law or legal advice, and it probably arises from my rather risk-averse nature, and you can do whatever you think is right.Going to the range is one of the few exceptions to the locked case requirement:

Enough disclaimers?
I think those apply to non-vehicle travel.
For example, you gather your preferred handguns in their unlocked soft cases, and put them in your trunk. You drive to a public shooting range.
You get to the public shooting range and park.
I think 12027 (f) covers walking in from the parking lot to the ranges (and back), carrying concealed handguns in UNlocked cases.
Similarly, I think (g) covers walking/hiking from your vehicle to where you are going to fish/hunt, and back.
Re-disclaimer: my interpretation only, your mileage may vary.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page
