Like 23 Blast on post #2, I use to have one in parkerized finish. I had to sell it off because I found that I am having much difficulty picking up the sights.

I was getting hammer-bites because of the arched MSH which pushes up the web of my hand near the hammer. From the box, FTF/FTE were common I had to replace and tune the extractor, and put in new EGW flat firing pin stop. After those were done, the gun became very reliable.

For what it was marketed for by Springfield, a good replica of a GI 1911, it is a good gun. There was a nice article on it in September 2004 in Shooting Time magazine written by Sheriff Jim Wilson.

Brazil were our allies in WWII, they served on the Italian front. As far as the OPs question, I have one and I've never had any problems with it. The only reason why I chose this one over the Mil-Spec was the fact that it was the WWII reproduction.

Pass On The GI - Buy The Mil-Spec

The GI is just too bare bones and has crappy sights. The Mil-Spec adds good sights, lowered ejection port, beveled magazine well and a few other refinements that are well worth the extra money.

I hope no matter what gun your dad gets you go shooting with him a lot, share and compete, loser by breakfast/lunch. It will make both of you better shooters and spend some quality time together.

I had one and sold it. I didn't like the utilitarian, parkerized finish, nor the nearly nonexistent sights. I'm also not a fan of arched mainspring housings and short triggers. I prefer flat MSH's and longer triggers.
Thats the point, they are WWII repro pistols

In any event, the GI 1911 by Springfield was my first pistol. I loved it! It always worked with any ammo, was easy to break down, and came from a company with a wonderful warranty stance. Highly recommended! The only reason I sold mine was to upgrade to a Springfield Operator.

I have the SA GI 45 and the only thing I changed on it were the grips. Didn't like the grips so i changed them to the Hogue rubber grips and feels much better. I've had it for over 7 years now and have fed it all different kinds of ammo and never had a problem with it at all. So far it eats whatever 45 ammo I feed it and no problems.

IMO for the price you can't go wrong with this.

The SA GI is a great gun. That's about as close to the original as you're going to get.

If you want to save some money, grab a Rock Island Armory GI.

I have one. It's a good pistol but the sights (GI) suck.

Never even implied anything about you not being able to say what you want. The point that I was making is that country of origin is not a very good parameter to go by if you are talking about quality. Because it's all pretty much the same.

But go ahead, read into things.
