          hmm

You ground off the black coating on your slide? What kind of gun is it? The best rust preventative would have been to not remove the black coating in the first place.

There is a lot more to those factory coatings than something that is just "sprayed on". I'm afraid you may have seriously compromised your weapon.

How did you get the coating off anyways. Take a bench grinder to it?

Yeah... and... odds are it isn't even a "coating" but a treatment that's impregnated into the metal... it'd be pretty tough to get that off most modern handguns to begin with...

            hence the

By your username I'll go out on a limb and guess that you're speaking in regards to a sig sauer pistol? Regardless, one can get a slide refinished for $50.00 plus shipping. From the sound of it your goal is a nickle or stainless finish on the slide. Depending on what you've done to it the slide may still be able to be refinished, but I'm not sure what it would run at this point.

If you polish away the finish, you'll just have to maintain it more with oil. There are a few who have polished the slide flats to make their own version of the "poor man's Equinox."

You'll devalue the pistol, but a professional refinish of the slide can be done if you choose you're tired of the PME look.

                  Hard Chrome is good...

You might consider sending the slide out for hard chroming. It costs about $100 and the finish is very hard and durable. It resembles brushed stainless steel in color. My Glock 23 shown below was hard chromed about 10 years ago and it doesn't show a scratch or discoloration of any type.

I use cerakote on all of the things that I coat and it is extremely tough stuff. I have 1911 GRP and use it in my blade tech kydex holster. I've done over a 100 holster draws with it and the slide is still not showing any signs of wear. Many factory firearm manufacturers use Cerakote as their factory finish. There are many color options to include many silver and chrome type colors. I thought that I would throw this out there as an option.

i would just leave the finish on there. if its a carry gun, the wear on the finish shouldnt really matter.

look into powder coating for steel. ive seen some really nice pieces that were not over done...but then again, plenty that look like **** because they were overdone.

attatched a picture of a FEG PA-63 i had finished for my wife. of course, the frame was aluminum so i was able to have it anodized. i actually thought about having my ruger P frame anodized clear just to help keep it nice looking
