    sig warranty: service problems

So after a lot of help from these forums i was advised to send my sig p226/9mm in for warranty. the slide was stripping the finish off of the top of the frame next to the hammer.

    pictures on post #9

i gave sig a call, told them i have unusual wear at the top of my frame where the finish is being stripped off, and they agreed to fix my issue. sig asked me if i had any other issues and i clearly stated "no, the stripping of the finish on the frame is my only issue". they emailed me a shipping label. naturally i printed it out packed up my firearm walked into UPS only to have them tell me firearms needed to be shipped next day air. the label i got from them was 2nd day air. i paid 95.00 out of my pocket to ship it next day air. the gun was off, arrived there the next day. i emailed the customer service rep that handled my case and requested reimbursement. Curtis said he could not reimburse the cost of the shipping label but could send something back with the gun (extra mags). i agreed and waited for my gun to return to me.

today i get a knock on the door and its fedex with my gun. i excitedly open the box and read the gunsmith's notes.

"MISSFIRES,FEEDING ISSUES. Checked pistol. Range tested. Could not duplicate customer's malfunctions."

WTF? well maybe they were lazy on the report and they fixed my frame issues? so i field strip it and there it was.. the same wear that was there before.. the same wear they agreed to fix but didn't. i spent 95.00 for them to range test my pistol for feeding/misfire issues when that wasn't even the problem. there we no extra mags either.

So i call the same person that handled my case, Curt. He did not even apologize for not fixing it. He stated the gunsmith probably got confused with another gun (which is no excuse, imo). I asked him if i can send it back for repair... and he had the nerve to say: "if that's what you want to do, then yeah..."

My response: "well of course that's what i want to do, i spent 95.00 on shipping for you to fix it and it didn't get fixed, so yes i want it shipped and fixed."

"..ok, ill send a shipping label out"

i've heard horror stories about sig's QA and how it's been sub par lately but i didn't want to believe it. now i do. this is the first firearm i've ever owned and only had it for a week. it's spent more time at Sig than it has in my safe. no idea what kind of a shop they're running there in exeter.

i know that typically p226's are reliable/awesome and i just got a lemon or something. but after my experiences thus far, my next pistol WILL NOT be a sig.

i should have just bought a g19 and be done with it.

Glock will have my next purchase in a firearm.

    *************************UPDATE: GUN received****************************

I email the customer service rep to inquire about the status of my weapon. He said the gunsmith was taking a look at it and if it had been dropped. I told him it was practically baby'd and did not drop it. He said the gunsmith found a burr on the slide. I received the gun back.. Here are his notes:

    Gunsmith Comments:
Slide was dropped and put a burr on the slide. Not covered under warranty. Removed burr from slide.
    Scott 02-11-10

Are you kidding me? I'm a civilian in California, there are no options to carry unless it's unloaded which is pointless. The slide has no scratches other than the inside. They assume I dropped it? Insane. Unbelievable. After the 2nd time sending this in, they're blaming it on me! I'm completely at a loss of what to do at this point. The wear on the frame is STILL there. Wow. I'm completely done with Sig, and every suggestion of it I see out there will get my negative response. This is absurd. Would a refund be too much to ask?

@Cobra64 When I call the Sig CS line I hear an option for a "Victoria" but that is only for dealers or something... Maybe I should just hit that number and talk to her.

This is seriously disappointing. My firearm has spent more time at Sig repair than in my safe.

    *************************UPDATE: Sig reported to BBB***********03.16.10*****************

i refused to deal with sig anymore about this problem. deeply unsatisfied i turned to the Better Business Bureau for the first time in my life. explained the problem in great detail.

    PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE.

nearly a month later, i get a call today from a Diana saying she was responding to my complaint to the Better Business Bureau. She cut straight to the point. They want to replace my pistol. She said to give me a FFL to where the new gun can be shipped and will send a call tag for the old one so i can send it back to them. Gave her the info, she sent the shipping label.

i asked again, "you guys are not going to fix it.. but REPLACE it, right?"

"that's correct. a brand new pistol."

hopefully, this time it wont be defective..

Sig has made progress. sucks that it had to go this far. the important thing is the situation is being resolved. thank you all for your comments.

This is your first gun ever Maybe you're expecting too much..

There's gonna be wear on guns where the parts meet up. Can you post pics of the wear? It it grinding metal off or is the finish just coming off?

If it's shooting fine, Im not sure it's even worth the hassle to keep sending it back..

That sucks the big one man. I would take it to a local smith and have him make sure its actually a problem that your experiencing. it may just be normal wear for your pistol. But if its new then it shouldnt be too worn yet. post some pics so other people that ha e the same gun can tell you if theirs is doing the same or not.

Yeah pics would definitely help here. It sounds like the wear you're experiencing is similar to what I saw when I got mine.

How many rounds have you fired through the gun? The area you're describing is actually a very common wear area on Sig pistiols. Every Sig I've ever seen, including both Sigs I own, have wear in the spots you describe. If it's peeing or gouging the frame to the point of removing metal that would be a different story.

Expectations of the gun or not, this is typical SIG attitude which has resulted in my conversion to Glock. SIG as a company is absolutely atrocious. They were years ago when I owned them and looks like they still are. I get a kick when I check in with SIG forum now and then and see the same old same old. Sorry you're having to go through this.

you shouldn't have told fedex it was a gun. or, you shouldnt have shipped it and ask for a new label. was the extra mags included when it got back?

                  Pics attached.

in the course of 2 range trips ive fired 210 rounds of WWB cleaned/greased before and after each trip.

yeah, its gouging. carving a groove.

@Crazed_SS i don't think im expecting too much. i wasn't expecting too much when i first called them. i did expect them to fix the issue though, which they didn't.

ive heard sigs going through 10000's of rounds without problems of wear like the one i have at 210 rounds.

Wow that sucks, did you at least get the extra mags he promised? I wasn't aware their customer service attitude was so bad. I'm glad I haven't had to send mine back.

Pictures would be good, it kinda sounds like normal wear to me. Here is a pic of mine, sorry about the horrible quality, all I have handy is my camera phone.

OK, yea, that's bad.. that's not wear, that's gouging metal out of the frame. They might have to replace the whole gun. The frame might be ruined and they might not want to play around with the slide that is messing up the frame...

Make sure you get them to fix it!

EDIT: Probably a couple 2000 rounds or so through mine.. it's just the finish coming off though. Yours looks like the slide is digging into the frame which is definitely not normal.

Your experience with gouging on the frame rail isn't anything out of the ordinary. I've seen it many times on the rear like yours, as well as the front rail. Hope it gets fixed the second time around.

BTW, what lube were you using? Oil or grease?
