    Springfield Custom Shop .45's

Anyone has or had a TRUE custom model 1911 from Springfield Custom Shop? I am looking at a six inch long slide PC9404 in 99% condition. Any input on current value? Where do Custom Shop 1911's form Springfield stand compare to Wilsons, Nighthawks, Custom Shop Kimbers, Les Baers? Thank You .

    I have one.

There are a couple of Springfield Custom guns that are on the roster, the Professional (AKA the FBI gun) and the Custom Carry.

My Custom Carry compares very favorably to my Les Baer, and I'd put it up against anything from Wilson, Ed Brown, or Nighthawk. I wouldn't bother with a Custom Shop Kimber, they use the same parts as the cheaper Custom II and just aren't on the same level as Baer, Brown, Wilson, Nighthawk or Springfield Custom.

A custom 1911 pistol from Springfield Custom shop are built from the ground up, from a solid steel forging to cnc machining to fitting the components to finish pistol, they built it when you order it.
They don't get a standard 1911 frame and get a matching slide to fit it together.

I will put up my Springfield Custom shop pistol to any Pistol from the Les Baer line, Les Baer ain't jack, cause i have a Les Baer 1911 S.R.P. w/1.5 Option and it couldn't come close to my Springfield Custom shop pistol, not even on Springfield Custom pistol worst day and Les Baer best day.

My Wilson Combat Tactical Super Grade Custom 45 on the other hand will eat the Springfield Custom shop 45 for Breakfast.

I took my Nighthawk GRP Recon and Ed Brown Special forces with the Les Baer 1911 S.R.P. to the Indoor range and let other people shoot all 3 of those 1911 with their ammo they bring in of course , and most of them prefer the Ed Brown as the 1911 to have if they have the money to buy it, a few prefer the Nighthawk over the Ed Brown, but no one chose the Les Baer over the other two.

One guy ask me "how much did i paid for the Les Baer S.R.P.", i told him $2500, and he said "I got ripped off, that Les Baer ain't got nothing over the other two".

I guess he was right on the Money.

Having owned a few Baers, a Wilson CQB, and three SA Customs, I can say the Springers have the tightest slide to frame to barrel to bushing fit, yet they are smooth as silk and 100% reliable with all ammo types. You can't even slide a hair inbetween the sides of the barrel hood and the breech.

Now, people will tell you that's not important. Well, if it's not, then the rest should not be charging as much as they do.

What would one expect to pay for a TOP OF THE LINE 6 inch longslide single stack .45 in 99% condition here in CA? ( A six inch version of PC9404 Dist.LTD.Match.)

FBI testing had the SA Custom (Professional model to us civilians) as the only one fully meeting their requirements and is now issued to their special teams (SWAT, etc.). That has to say something.

A lot of the "custom 1911 gunsmiths" got their start working for the SA Custom Shop. They put out high quality product with excellent service.

never bought a 1911 before so here's my question

is it possible to get an EXTREMELY good 1911 for $900-$1,100 that will compete with one that costs $1,900++++

higher cost doesn't always mean it's better

Accuracy is all in the barrel and bushing lockup. Get any forged frame 1911 for around 600 bucks like a SA GI and spend a few more bills on a match barrel and bushing. Have a good gunsmith fit it and you will end up with a gun that will shoot with the best of them for under 1000. It won't have the fit and finish like the rest but it will be a great shooter. I'd you have $ left over, have a trigger job done and some decent sights put on you will be set.

don't worry about rattles and other funny noises and slide to frame fit.
as mentioned by VTA, its about the barrel to bushing matching.
If u notice most custom packages from well known 1911 smiths will just use the stock barrel and fit a match bushing. Best thing to do is just recrown it to ensure the barrels good to go.

                    - is it an option at the sa custom shop to leave the engravings off of the slide (leave the slide naked)? i've never liked how busy the sa 1911 slides looked.

                    thanks.

But durability of this lockup depends on slide to frame fit. If you use the lower barrel lugs to make the gun tight, it won't stay tight very long.

It is possible if you know what you are looking for, and if you are lucky. One of my <$1k 1911's shoots equal to or better than a TRS.

Springfield Custom Shop makes some nice stuff. The wait time is awhile too. But as is most of the custom shops out there. I still prefer my 1943 Ithaca to my Wilson CQB. As nice as the Wilson was it didnt have that been there done that feeling of the ithaca. Its apples to applesauce though. If you want a fair comparison to the springfield then you have to compare it to true custom pistols not the semi-custom ones that most of the wilsons, baer's and ed browns put out. Those are more like high end production pistols.

                            1. The grips are curly koa.
                            2. I don't know if it's an option, I never checked because it's doubtful you could get the naked slide here in California. You might be able to get it if you order it from PA though. Call the Custom Shop at (800) 617-6751.

So in Your opinion, what would be a NO BRAINER preice for a 2006 99% Cusotm Shop pc9404 ( DIST LTD) 6 inch longslide .45ACP? Thank You. PS. I mean a deal that is hard to pass. AND WOULD YOU BUY A LONG SLIDE 1911 in the first place?
