Please tell me what this is.

I am now told this is not a Colt 1911.

It says Government Model COLT and then shows a colt rearing up (inscribed)

it shoots 45 acp http://i857.photobucket.com/albums/a...x/IMG_0179.jpg thanks

thats a colt 1911 as far as I can see. if it has the rearing pony, then its a colt.

ETA: without better pics its hard to tell, but it may be a colt frame with a different slide or vice versa.

Sure looks like a 1911 to me, origional that is, not a 1911-A1. Doesn't have the lowered and flaired ejection port, has short trigger as apposed to the long trigger in the A1s.

A guy on gunbrokers told me it was not a 1911 and i could not believe what he said. However it doesn't say 1911 on it and even the best camera could not pick up the inscribing on this. It was made in 1918! 313xxx On the top of the bolt it says colt 45 auto.

          1911

That is definately a 1911A1. At least the frame is. The slide may be a 1911.
When the government rebuilt the pistols, they used whatever was on hand.
More likely, however, is that some private owner or gunsmith changed the slide. The pistol or at least its' frame could not have been made in 1918,as the 1911A1 was not adopted until 1926. There were 5 changes between the two. 1.The radius cuts behind the trigger area.2.Larger sights.3.Shorter trigger.4.Arched mainspring housing. I can't remember the 5th. The lowered and flared ejection port started on the Commander,a civilian model. Military 1911's and 1911A1's did not have that feature. Colt started adding it to all their pistols in the 80's. Grips are aftermarket Pachmayers.

The grips are original colt. I know you cant see the pic but it says colt underneath with a colt rearing up on it. (in the gold medalion) I dont believe it is an A1 doesnt even say it is a 1911 on it. As for the 80's thing this pistol never saw the light of day from the 60's till now. This is real cool!! No one seems to be able to figure it out.

No, the grips are aftermarket Pachmyr. They come with the Colt medallion, and I wouldn't be surprised if a few Colts had come with them from the factory, but nothing prior to 1970...

It's definitely not all original, it's probably been rebuilt and parts mixed by a government armory, which is very common with military guns. It could've been a civilian conversion as well.

Where did that info come from and is it documented? I'm skeptical.
