as good of a 45acp pistol as they come. Feels similar to a 1911 or a BHP. That is if you are into that kinda thing. Although it really depends what yoy are trading for.

I have one; it's very good at delivering big hunks of hot metal downrange. I've had mine for many, many years and it was my late father's duty weapon (kept when he retired)

I've just recently replaced some springs and small parts. Parts are still available from S&W

you'll never win a match with this pistol, and they carry little resale value, but they will feed and fire ANYTHING you ask 'em to; mine (and apparently most) will even strip and chamber empty fired cases!

wadcutters and JHPs are no problem; the slide might as well be dropping on an empty pipe.

When you drop the hammer, it will fire EVERY time. These are kind of like the AKM of the .45 ACPs (and almost as heavy)

My big old M645 is the one handgun (of about a dozen pistols) that rides along on every road trip. I would bet the farm on this gun. period.

Call S&W and order a new $3.00 recoil spring when you get it; it will likely need replacement, and it will last another 20 years.

645 is a second generation S&W 45 acp auto. They are indestructable and will feed just about anything. 625 is a 45 acp revolver.

The 645 is a great gun, I used to have one. They are hard to get in Cali due to the list.

Yeah, I should read thoroughly before posting. I saw 645 and thought it was a typo. I have a 625, that's why I posted.

You'll be well heeled with a 645. Built like a tank, durable as anything, and they will run and run and run once you settle on the ammo it best likes to digest.

Their run was rather short as they were introduced circa 1985 and the Third Generation 4506 was introduced in 1988 to supersede the 645. Being an S&W auto guy, I jonesed for a 645 from it's introduction, and wound up with a 4506 just after they were introduced, that I still have.

S&W autos are underrated, in my opinion. The used ones usually do not fetch good resale prices, but they are reliable autos. I have a S&W 459 that has cycled many rounds through it and it still functions and shoots well. Never had a FTE/FTF/FTRB with my S&W.

The S&W 645 was the pistol that Don Johnson carried in Miami Vice.

Sonny Crockett carried a number of different guns throughout the five season run of the popular series. In the original two-hour premier he carries a Browning BDA in .45 Auto (this is the European heel mag release version of the Sig-Sauer P220 imported by Browning). After this though, he carries a Bren Ten for the rest of the first two seasons. For the third and fourth seasons Detective Crockett switches to a Smith & Wesson 645 in .45 Auto. Then in the fifth and final season he changes once again, this time to the new Smith & Wesson 4506, also in .45 Auto. In a number of shows throughout the run Sonny is also seen carrying a .45 Detonics Combatmaster in an ankle holster, but I am not sure which episode or season this started.

I had one of the early model 645's when they first came out. I owned it for about a year or so. I always felt it was a very large pistol though and never was able to find a holster to properly carry it concealed....so I ended up selling it.

That being said, I still would get one again if a deal ever came up. Even though it was a big gun, I found the grip very comfortable and it was a great shooter.

There may be some variability in the earlier ones (1985ish...) I wasn't happy with mine (mostly feed of 180gr truncated bullets) and got rid of it to a gunsmith who was most happy to have a platform to customize for bowling-pin shoots. This was back in 1989 when I wasn't as much of a gunnie either.

You should however take my data as an outlier, because many many folks are happy with their 645s.

I absolutely LOVE the 3rd gen S&W successor to the 645, called the 4506.

I have one of the earlier 4506s, and it's 100% operational with various ammo types and great accuracy. I got it used and am gonna send it back to S&W for external refinishing (the innards are barely used, the outside has some nicks & dings from casual carry/handling....)

S&W autoloaders are underrated. Besides my 4506 in 45acp and my 1006 in 10mm, I just picked up a minty 5906 in 9mm
