Perhaps something with retention. This gets into thumbsnaps; finger releases; mechanical ejection port spring-locks, etc. There are several from which you may choose. These go beyond a finely made Kydex or leather molded holster, but may not aesthetically look as good.

Shop high quality gun holsters from Safariland. Browse by holster application, carry type, function, retention level, and security mechanism to find the perfect fit.

Look no further than Safariland. They have a few different levels of retention holsters that will work with Glock 21s. For open carry it's a very, very bad idea to buy a holster that doesn't have some sort of retention system.

The Safariland 6377 is a pretty solid belt holster (actually the paddle version is, I believe, the one that L-2 pictured above). I use one for my G17. It runs about $50 and it has an active retention system that requires you to depress a lever to de-holster your pistol.

If you want to spend more money you could get a lot more hardcore and buy a Safariland 6360. The 6360 is more heavy-duty and is marketed more towards LEOs than civilian buyers. It has an even more advanced retention system with two different mechanisms in it. It's a very good holster, and it's gonna run you around $100.

Assuming you don't get any gravel, sand, rocks, or any other small particles inside the fickle release mechanism... do a google search on "Serpa failure" and read the multitude of pages that come up.

Never had a problem with mine. Of course, I am not doing an O' Course every time I use it either.

But I do carry a Taser in a Serpa and it has been perfect for me.

I have a feeling it is mainly because they have so many of them out there. I think they have more Serpas out there than all other retention type holsters combined. Thanks for the heads up on the failures. I had no idea dirt could cause so many problems with them. Mine have been perfect but they only see action at USPSA and IDPA matches. Other than that they stay in the closet. They have seen no real world use so to speak.

I like the leather pancake style holster, ride high and tight with retention strap.
