    Handgun Transfers to under 21

    Hey guys,

Had two questions about transferring the registration of guns in California.

First, handguns. I received an old Raven Arms .25auto pistol from my grandfather for my 19th birthday, and he wasn't sure what to do about transferring the ownership. I know the legal age is 21 to purchase, but I've heard a relative can give a handgun to a family member over 18?

And on that same stream, would that also apply to newer firearms? I would like to get a Glock 17 or maybe a 1911, but with the age to purchase at what it is, im still a couple of years off. But could my mom purchase it for me, and have it transferred before then?

I shot a few different handguns on a hunting trip recently. I shot a G17, a S&W 1911, and a .380 llama. The 380 felt really small, and I just didn't like the feel of it. But Id like to try a few more before I choose, just wanna know if its even possible.

    Thanks for your guys' help.

OK, You can have a pistol at the age of 18 but it can not be in your name. It can be in your home, you can take it shooting by yourself (if range rules allow under 21) as long as its in your Grandfathers name or one of your parents then when you turn 21 have it put under your name ASAP.

I went through the same thing at 18 but please don't take only my word for it. Read up on the DOJ site and even ask your local dealer. This kind of thing you don't want to get wrong.

A handgun can be transferred to and registered by a person over 18 years of age as long as they have a Handgun Safety Certificate. The transfer would have to be from a parent/grandparent since a dealer transfer cannot be done with anyone under 21 years old.

See there you go. I told you not to take my word for it LOL .

lol.. well thanks to both of ya. The more i read about this little handgun I have the less I like it. Seem's like it was more or less as i expected from the super small size of it. Not too reliable.

Put about 40 rounds through it and had 1 jam, and at one point the slide damn near came off. On the back theres a little spring loaded hook that hooks the slide to the main body, and sends it back and it caught on there. I think its probably a good idea to set it in the safe as one of the heirloom's I dont shoot.

            Anyway, thanks again!

The Raven was supposed to be a pretty reliable cheap .25. I'd hardly call it an heirloom though!

Try shooting different brands of ammo for it. If any internal parts are worn, you should be able to buy new ones at http://www.e-gunparts.com

So is the slide catching like it did a big problem? Or not one at all?

I think my biggest problem is I've never really dealt with handguns "in depth" before so I don't know the difference between worn and not worn when it comes to internals.

They weren't made to be shot much... Back when they were really popular you could find them for as little as $35 brand new in the box.....

I couldn't say exactly what the problem with the gun was without looking at it, but I'd bet the little hook ont he back retaining piece wore down over the eyrs- a new part should fix that. And check the pin (or whatever) the little hook catches on the frame for wear too.

The Davis/Bryco/Raven/Jennings SA pistols all use the same design. I used to have a Davis .380- it worked fine (no jams) though my slide cracked eventually :P
