I have a Smith & Wesson .38 special CTG 6” barrel – Blue, checkered walnut grips decent condition, some blue wear. (Minor) any idea what this is worth?

There should be a model number on the frame, visible when you open up the cylinder. That is the only way anyone can even make a rough guess. Pictures would be nice as well.

Hi

You have a five screw, 6" barrel, pre model 10 commonly known as a .38 Military & Police. 1945 to 1948. The serial number should begin with a "S". The grips, if original, should be numbered to the gun. There won't be any "model" # on the frame when you open the cylinder. Depending on the condition, worth anywhere from $250 to $450 IMHO.

The serial # is C 139090 I am sure they are original grips but I do not think it is a police or military version, there are no markings to lead me in that direction.

Serial number indicates 1949 to 1951. If the grips are original to the gun, the number stamped in the right grip should match the serial # on the butt of the gun. Also you should find the same serial # under the barrel & on the cylinder.

And ref: "I do not think it is a police or military version, there are no markings to lead me in that direction". The name or "model" of your gun, given by Smith & Wesson, is .38 Military & Police. It could have never seen military or police service, but that's what the gun is called.

I have one too. Its a 6 shot and the wood grips are not orignal. Serial # is- 3023xx.

You have a pre-war target model, worth more than a standard M&P, the grips are not original and the front sight might be after market so maybe $650 to the right buyer,

the post war M&P from the OP looks to be about a $350 piece, they made millions of them and such, they are the most commonly encountered S&W

Can you post some close ups of the Hammer, front sight and rear sight, mostly interested in the hammer though

Sure. Just looking at the hammer, I dont see much wear, but I am not an Expert.
