P7K3 that I'm thinking about selling...

Hello,

I'm new to this forum and pretty much a handgun newbie. My father just gave me this P7K3 .380 , s/n US-4xx, and I have no need for such a handgun. I know it has only been shot once back in the early '90s for no more than 100 rounds then cleaned. It has since been in his gun safe. Since he hasn't shot it, he decided to give it to me. I'll be sending in my Intra-Familial Handgun Transaction form soon but was wondering if I could bypass it,(keep under my dad's possession), and sell/trade it for another handgun?

What's your thoughts? If I did it that way, can the next gun be registered to me directly? Should I sell it outright or should I find a way to trade it to save the hassle of selling? Does anyone know a place that would trade?

Keep it and enjoy it!

If you decide to trade it or sell it, do alot of research first as this is more valuable than you are probably aware of. There will be plenty of people who would like to low-ball you on it, or steal it from you, so do a bit of research before you try to get rid of it.

Do not sell it. Today it worth couple grand. It will probably double in the next ten years. How many investments can claim that?

If you must sell it - Research the price like posters above mentioned - Depends on what you have it might be worth anywhere between 2k-3500K -

This is truly a rare gun, and not in California, but everywhere. I used to see this gun for sale on GunBrokers and GunsAmerica, but no more. People will not sell it for any amount of less than four grand because of its scarcity.

Keep it and take good care of it. You'll never find one again and if it's from your Dad, that's probably the biggest reason not to sell it. Heck, you could probably use it as a collateral for a loan if you needed the cash. I'd loan you money just to have it for a year and shoot it!

Thank you folks for the info. I was told it was worth something and I thought that since I'm not much of a "collector", I would try to get what monetary value I could for it but wasn't sure what the best way of doing it.

Come to think if it, with all your recommendations, I may end up not selling it for now....Especially since I just purchased a SA XD9 and will be picking that up this Friday. This should hold my cravings for a while.

Would it be in my best benefit not to shoot the P7K3 and keep it locked up or just enjoy the thing? This handgun is in almost new condition and was wondering if I should just keep it that way?

When I get home from work, I'll take a few pics and post them.

If it were mine I would not shoot it any, these rare pistols are valuable to those that collect HK and the more pristene the better. If you have the box and accessories it came with that will be most important to value. Right now you would be best advised to keep the HK, this is a buyers market right now and these pistols don't sell for top dollar. If you are willing to sit on it for a few years it could bring a good price. If you get into a financial emergency you should be able to sell it quickly if the price is low.

Your first order of business, regardless of whether you plan to sell or keep it, is to check whether the oil-filled buffer is still good. The manual shows how to check this. Basically, the metal rod that protrudes from the buffer in the frame should be about 1cm out, and if you push it in, it should pop back out under oil pressure.

If you sell it, a knowledgeable buyer will ask about this specific point. And, if you plan to keep it, knowing whether the buffer still works will dictate whether you can safely shoot it or not. Unfortunately, HK no longer makes replacement P7K3 buffers, and none are currently available.

Do not sell it on two counts:

1) your father has excellent taste in firearms and you should keep it for sentimental reasons.

2) As the other poster said you will not see another one. Even if you do would you buy it for $3,500+?

There are buffers available..not many and very hard to find..
The buffers are known to fail..
The buffer is only needed if you are shooting the 380acp and maybe the 32acp.
The 22lr conversion does not need the buffer to operate. You will find some K3's out there that are only one caliber but not too many with all three.
All three calibers make it a high value package. Hold onto it for a few more years and you can sell it for a good price.
