Sig questions

I have a P226 in 9mm - I'm toying with the idea of getting a couple more handguns.
SIg have a bundle of different numbers and models out there. Are they all designed in a similar manner to the P226 in terms of ease of stripping and simplicity? I've seen used Sig's in shotgun news available cheap - ($300 or so, can't remember the model) presumably ex military. Are all Sig's reliable and solid, or are there any I should stay away from?

Sig's are reliable as any good branded pistol.

No safety to worry about, just point and shoot. Great balance since the P226 is metal.

There's no horror stories of sigs, like Glock's a kaboom's and such.

I've owned about 4 sigs in the past. Sig 220, 232, 225, 228,

The 220 was police trade-in, reliable, heavy but went bag every time
232 was consignment, started to have jams after 1k of rounds, the magazine catch lever was bent, fixed by smith, no problems since.
225 - german police trade in, slim, would eat FMJ's, but picky with certain hollow point brands.
228 - brand new, issue with front sight falling off, sent back for service, not a problem since.

Overall, I was happy with all my sigs, just own one now, the 228. Just they are pricey these days. If you can get it used/CPO, go for it.

SIG's model numbers can be a bit confusing. There are 6 main SIG categories:

SIG's P-series:
Here we have SIG's P220,P225,P226,P228,P229,P239, and P245. Stamped or stainless slide on aluminum alloy or Stainless steel frame.

SIG's P232:
SIG's .380 blowback singlestack subcompact

P250:
SIG's modular polymer pistol

Revolution, RCS, and GSR variants:
SIG's 1911s

Mosquito:
SIG's mini-me P-series .22LR

SIG Pro:
P2202, P2340, P2009, their compact polymer handguns


If it's something close to the P226, which now comes in 9mm,40,or 357SIG look into a P228 or P229 which is the compact version of the P226. The P225 (or P6) is similiar to a P228 but single stack. These are probably the ones you've been seeing for sale, along with the Zurich trade in P228s.

Of the models listed by Black Majik; the 239, 226, 229 and 250* come in other calibers, so make sure if you're communicating with a seller to specify that the pistol you are thinking of buying is a 9mm.

*I'm not sure if the same is true for the Pro series i.e. 2009 and 2022

sounds like the Sigs you've been seeing in Shotgun New are the former German LE trade-in P6 model...very close to the commercial 225

there are a bunch of LE trade-in 226 and 228 in CA right now going for $450-$500

I've got a West German 220 (.45 acp), a Stainless 226(.40/.357 sig), and a West German P6 (9mm) police trade in. I've also shot my buddy's stainless 229 (.40) and his stainless 226 (9mm).

I like shooting my single stack P6 the most. Even though my buddy's 226 is stainless and weighs more, I feel like I have better control with the p6...maybe because it's a single vs. double stack like the 226?

I love those grips.

I have a P220, P226/40, P228 and W. German P6, I am very happy with all of them. The P6 and 228 were both police trade ins, a little shabby on the outside, but both looked damn near new on the inside.

Sooner or later I'll get myself a P229/40.

I once owned 14 Sigs, almost every P series model in different variances. I sold all of them and only kept two calibers and two pistols, P226R 9mm, and P220ST .45. These two are all you really need. Most of my dozen other Sigs were post 2004 production Sigs and some just werent as reliable as the older or I like to think, pre 2004 built Sigs. The QA/QC just qasn't there. They look pretty at a glance but noticed that there were always things that should not have gotten out of the factory, per say. I refuse to buy newer production Sigs now but you can always find great deals on older used Sigs.

IMHO Sig Sauer makes some of the best handguns in the world. I own many Sigs and love each and every one of them. I've heard rumors of QC problems, but never experienced any. My last Sig purchased is just 2 years old.

I would add a good P239 to the list of must haves.
