Beretta 92fs problems?

I was curious if anyone owns one and if so, any problems?

I was at a local shop looking at one this last weekend. Thinking of picking up one as a cheaper reliable 9mm target shooter (not for carry or duty) but the shop person proceeded to trash talk the hell out of it while pointing me to a nearly twice the price HK USP. I kind of felt like he was doing it just for the sake of trying to sell a more expensive gun. I'm not against HK but it wasn't what i was looking for.

According to the sales person, the boys back from the war have nothing good to say about them and think they're trash.

I been having a beretta 92FS for more than 14years and it is my 3rd one.
I never had a single problem with beretta.

Ye... It has an issue about the weak slide but I don't think regular normal range guy will break the hell out of slide.
Since the ammo price went up high.

I think beretta is a good choice 9mm if you have med~large hand.
So don't worry.

I've owned mine over 10 years and have nothing bad to say about it... Sounds like he was trying to sell you a pricier gun.

Go to another gunshop and buy a 92fs. They are good pistols. Some firearm salesman are over opinionated and think they know everything. He was was probably refering to the 9mm NATO's lack of knockdown power. Just use quality magazines and you will be happy.

The gun is too heavy. Save your money and buy a Glock. If you don't want to be like everyone else... then buy a 1911 clone in 45. If you are going to have a heavy gun... might as well shoot a heavy bullet.

If you are STILL stuck on a heavy 9mm... buy a cheaper model. I have a Star Firestar 9mm I like to shoot and it only cost me $300.00. It shoots very well too.

I've never owned any Beretta firearms but I have fired just about every Beretta pistol made including the model 92FS and it felt like a good gun and I had no problems during the very brief time I used them.

However my local range says differently. I once asked to rent a 92FS and the guy claimed they no longer rent model 92's because they wear out and need more maintenance than other pistols they rent out more specifically glocks and Sig's. That was really the first opinion from what seemed liked a reliable source I have heard on the subject.

From what he claimed is that Beretta's don't last as long as other mainstream pistols. The only reason they don't have a worse rap was that most people who own them never use them to the point of major failure.. That's just what I heard.

My .02 cents is that their open slide design is goofy. It Sure it looks cool as it gives that unique Beretta 2 tone slide (slid/barrel) but it just seems like the design would allow all sorts of debris to enter the mechanism. It is common practice to lightly lube the outside of the barrel where it contacts the slide, just imagine dropping it in the sand, the whole barrel would be completely encased in sand.

I am one to beleive the military adopted the 92fs was on the basis of price alone and I think the fact they are actively looking for a replacement suggests that. I bet the military will switch to a polymer frame DA/SA pistol in .45. My guess would be the new FNP-45's as the company has a reputation for military sales.

Beretta, Sig, Hk, Glock.... They are all good.
It is practice which makes you a good shooter not the gun
So Buy whichever fits your hands better and practice.

its what i learned to shoot on, fairly accurate, heavy, low recoil. I would not buy one, but I like Sigs and had a beretta 9000 that was a POS, and the factory would not fix issues on it, having only a 1 year warranty. Nevertheless, its fairly cheap, decently made, classic looking gun. I hate glocks, but i'd say buy a glock instead however.

It all comes down to personal preference. I took my new (to me) 92F out for the first time over the weekend, and I have to say that the ridiculously heavy trigger really kills it for me. I really like how the gun fits in my hand and how it shoots, but that DA pull is just absurd. I would compare a Beretta to a Ferrari. They are very well made pistols that perform with the best of them, but they are a little more finicky and require a little more maintenance than some of the other big manufacturers (SIG, Glock, H&K, S&W, etc.). I have no intention of getting rid of my 92 at this time, but I will say that I prefer to shoot my Glock 34.

OP- I dont own one, but would love to just because I like these work horses. As for wear, tear and reputation, I put a lot of weight into the fact that the LAPD and LASO have owned thousands of them and they served the departments well.

BlackonBlack made an excellent post. I've also heard the reports of berettas not standing up, durability-wise, to other competitors given the same level of care and maintenance.

I bought one recently, and while I think it's a quality pistol, with a nice, smooth action, I also think it's overly large for a 9mm. I also own a CZ-75b, and to me that is about the ideal size and weight for a full sized service 9mm. The heavy weight and fat grip of the beretta do make it very pleasant to hold and to shoot, however.

Would I pick it as my first choice to go into harm's way with? Well, out of my gun safe, no. If I needed a handgun I'd trust my life to, it'd be either my 1911 or my s&w 66. But I'd not feel uncomfortable armed with the beretta, either.

i just purchased my second 92fs and yes it is a little big in the hand but if you are looking to use for the range or home defese the size really does not matter because you are not trying to conceal it. I feel they are gret guns and every bit as reliable as a Glock ,SIg and any other brand name gun,If you like and it fits and feels good in your hand don't let anyone tell you otherwise
just go to the range and practice and have fun .
The military LAPD and the LA Sherrif's can't be all wrong ,enjoy

Love my 92FS.. I always wanted one and for some reason I waited this long to get one. I no longer even want to shoot my XD or other 9mms as Im in love with the 92.
