    .38 special ammo question

    Handgun newbie here.

This ammo has the bullet surrounded by the casing, rather than sitting atop the casing. Is this kind of cartridge common in handgun ammo?

Is this decent ammo for plinking?

For wadcutter rounds it is common....especially 38 Special. It's okay for plinking.

It's fine those are called wadcutters and punch a nice round hole in the
paper, easy to see. just be sure clean your gun good after, they lead up the barrel and forcing cone pretty good.

        Shoot em!!

I think you'll find that they are very accurate rounds. The 148gr Hollow Base Wadcutter is a match target round and, as others have noted, they cut a very nice hole in a paper target. They are a mild recoiling round. Some folks even like to use them for a defensive purposes when handloaded to higher velocities.

interesting, i didn't know that Blazer made wadcutter rounds.

wadcutters are usually looked at as target ammo...it's easier to score a target because of the clean, full caliber, holes...but it makes great beginning/learning ammo

            You'll love'em if you're shooting paper- like a .38 caliber hole puncher.

Oh God, they seat the bullets upside down again!

I used to shoot 38 Special wadcutter ammo in my Smith & Wesson model 52 for international centerfire pistol matches.

Semi-wadcutter and wadcutter lead bullets are fine. There is so much negative and wrong information out there about lead bullets. Factory lead bullet loadings and handloads to not much over 1,000 fps are easy on barrels and do not excessively cause lead fowling. Typical cleaning is all that is needed after a shooting session. Nothing wrong with those Blazer wadcutters. I've shot them (lead bullets) in revolvers and pistols for years with no adverse affects.

I load and carry inverted hollow base wadcutters for 4 legged critters.

I load and carry inverted hollow base wadcutters for 4 legged critters and have fired them at steel discs, they really open up plus for target practice.

I've shoot PPC with such ammo for years. Star 148 HBWC propelled by 2.9 grains of HP38 or W231 and Fed 100 using a heavy roll crimp gave me less than 2" groups at 50 yards (sandbag benched). In fact, if you can find a S&W model 52, it shoots nothing but flush fitting wad cutter rounds in 38Spl.

BTW, you can custom a 1911 to shoot this 38Spl ammo too.
