22LR Wheelgun Recommendation?

I've got a customer looking for a .22lr revolver in the ~$300 price range. He isn't partial to new/used, but would prefer one from a major manufacturer. He likes the old west look of the guns, but isn't expecting to get anything made during the period. A reproduction would be fine with him. Any recommendations of what types of make/models I should be looking for?

I would hope hope for a S&W .22 that maybe had some cosmetic problems and had been shot very little for that price range. I would prefer to have the highest quality lightly used over a brand new revolver of lesser quality for the same price. Taurus has some nice revolvers but quality control has been a crap shoot in my experience.

Old West type gun and DA don't go together.

For a DA, S&W 617 or older K22 no question. Over his budget though. Even a used one won't be less than $500. Can't think of any other quality 22 DA revolver. A SA might be his only choice in that price range.

Thanks again for this input. I'll talk to him again and either get him to revise his price range or to re-consider a single action such as the Ruger Single Six as many have pointed out.

A Dan Wesson 22 is about the next best thing to a 617 or K22. In fact it is better if you get a custom barrel. I'm basing my opinion from being a 34-1 and a DW22 owner. Of course these guns aren't readily available in CA due to the roster.

For a double action .22 rimfire revolver under $300 he's looking at a used Taurus or Rossi. If he can find a Smith for that price, tell him to buy two. I'll buy the other one!

Taurus makes a neat looking 9 shot 22lr that has the aesthetics of the raging bull... called... the Taurus Tracker.

Look for a Used Smith that fits his hand. (they build 3 frame size 22's now I think) Lots of adequate guns around but the Smith is the best these days......since Colt quit building them and became so collectible......Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm Colt 4 " Diamondback!!!!!!!!

S&W 617 but thats over your budget. So maybe the Taurus 94 or Tracker.
