    S&W price check

I've been offered first dibs on a S&W 629 Classic (44Mag). No lock, hammer-mounted firing pin, in the original box w/ paperwork. Basically been told "Make me an offer" and I am trying to figure out about what kind of price range to go with.

From the pics I've seen, it looks to be in great condition with a slight turn line on the cylinder.

The gf has looked at it and says there is "a hole in the top of the barrel at the end". This has me thinking it's a 629 Classic w/ PowerPort which would push the price up a bit.

So anyway, any SMEs out there who can give me an idea on the value & recommended pricing for this handgun?

I'm considering approx $500 +/- but would like to hear some opinions.

Probably about $100+/- more than that, and more + than -.

At least $650, If I were to run across it in a gun shop around here it would run $750 to $850 and it would sell, not quick but I have seen them go for $850

Kurac speaks the truth....I would grab *any* N-frame that was pinful / lockless....those guns are in short supply in California and in pretty high demand.

(I write this as I weep over the 624 in Fresno IN FRESNO!!! on Gunbroker that isn't for sale in Ca). It just kills me. There's a Model 28 on there too...in Ontario . Also not avail for PPT

What makes me crazy is the obvious collusion of market interests (the manufacturers) and the political hacks (DOJ). Why every Model 29 going back to 1955 isn't "OK" for sale has nothing to do with "safety".

Offer the guy $650, if he still has the sales slip, that should be $100 more than he paid for it.

I've seen the same listing.... I'd drive to Fresno to get it.... TWICE!

Thanks for the info, looks like I'm going to buy it.

Sigh..... Gonna have to get another gun safe at this rate.

Ummm....... those made in '55 and '56 should be legal under the C&R provisions. Now the really bad part is that a '55 and a '56 are good to go but the same gun made in '57 is not!

I would check the Serial # on the 624, there is a recall on a serial number range for cylinder material defect.

I'd give 500 if I wanted it. Can you believe I paid 400 4 years ago for a nice 629 classic dx ppt! Not ported though. I'm looking for a Ruger 44mag now though to compliment my 2 Smiths and of all things a Rossi rifle and a Llama also in 44mag!

Yes nice older N frames are a bit pricey and hard to come by but can still be found if you look. I got a 25-5 4" 45LC in the presentation case last year for 500 which is high for me but I had wanted one for years.

Thanks, that will save me calling him on Monday.
You'd think they'd mention that in their description.
