Snake loads in a 9mm or 45acp

Have any of you tried to use any of these small shot-shells in a semi-auto pistol? Will they cycle?

I've heard they will not, but I have never used them.

I've used the 9mm snake shot in a few of my pistols. 19 out of 20 times they will not cycle.

I tried the 45ACP in my 1911A1 and it was a no go.

I remember watching my dad and his buddy hunt grouse when i was little on a deer hunting trip in idaho. They always wondered why they didn't just bring a shotgun. They do work though. They were shooting .357 though.
