    Ruger LCR

I am planning to buy the Ruger LCR for my wife. It's her first gun. Any thoughts or opinions on this weapon? I've read a few articles about the LCR and most have been positive.

i have handled but not shot the LCR

i think it's a little light for a "first" handgun

maybe something more controllable may be in order ... imho

plus one on the suggestion to shoot before purchasing

It would be more for home defense. I wanted a revolver for her so that it's easier to use. A friend is selling the LCR.

LCR is a great revolver for HD use. But it is light-weight...since it's a transaction between friends, having your wife handle and shoot the LCR beforehand sounds easy enough to arrange and would really show you and her if it's the right gun or not.

The LCR will be my next purchase after spending weeks of research. I think you are making a great choice! If you don't mind me asking, how much are you paying? I'm just wondering what the going rate is used.

A Ruger LCR or S&W Airweight 442 are both excellent .38 revolvers, and particularly well suited (IMHO) for use by females with smaller hands.

It's size and weight are both the advantage and simultaneously the disadvantage of these smaller revolvers. Great for carry but not particularly easy to shoot because of their short sight radius and greater perceived recoil. I heard from someone that I respect, refer to small frame revolvers as an "expert's" gun. It may seem be a good deal, but it might not suit the purpose you have in mind. Good luck.

for a HD pistol, using a small gun like the LCR or S&W J-frame is handicapping yourself without reason.

the LCR and J-frame are excellent carry guns, but more difficult to shoot than their larger brothers...it takes more skill and practice to shoot well

good HD revolvers start at the S&W K-frame and larger...after all, the overall size of the gun doesn't play a part in it's selection. control and accuracy should be more important factors in gun selection.

New, they're going for about $405 + tax + DROS here in Kalifornia...

If the price is right, it is still a good option. Just know that she will have to put in more time at the range to become proficient.

I would recommend a larger framed gun. The smaller the pistol, the more it will bite. Women typically are not into guns that hurt to shoot.

If it is for HD I would definitely go with a larger weapon. Why force your wife to use a hard-biting 5 shot when you could go with something like a 7 or 8 shot revolver that wouldn't be nearly as bad to shoot?

If it has to be a revolver my vote is for a SW 686+

True. Thanks for the input everyone. I'll keep an eye out for a good deal on a .40 semi then.
