Range bag -- would not be considered a holster, right?

Hi guys,

I have a gift certificate for Zappos that I need to use. I currently have a small hand carry travel bag (fits 2-3 handguns, earmuff and a few mags).

I'm thinking about getting getting a waist/lumbar bag to use as a range bag -- it allows me to carry my stuff without using my hands. Something maybe like this: http://www.zappos.com/the-north-face...saratoga-green

Would this be legal to use in CA? I just want to make sure it couldn't technically be considered a holster. Alternative would be maybe a small backpack (like the kind used for cycling -- camelpak, etc).

You can conceal in anything, making it illegal. The difference is the lock, if it's in a locked range bag/box/case/back-pack/wooden crate it is no longer illegal concealed carry, it's legal transportation.

Thanks. Are there any requirements on the lock and fasteners? Can I put a small lock through the holes on the zipper slider?

As far as I'm aware, no, any lock on the zippers will do. But, I'm not an expert, before you take my word for it, wait for a more knowledgable person to chime in.

Rover's got it.

Just use a key lock or a combination lock (3 tumbler) to lock the bag through the eyes of the zippers, and keep the handguns unloaded inside the bag.

FUD, don't spread FUD! You can even have ammunition attached to the buttstock of a shotgun without it being considered loaded. "in a position from which it can be fired". A loaded magazine in the magwell would be considered loaded per PC. In the same container is fine.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I always operated under the presumption that ammunition loaded into a magazine with the magazine NOT placed into the magwell of a pistol is not considered loaded. Loose ammunition as well can all be in the same locked container. Lots of LEO and gun shop employees will tell you to keep ammo/gun separated so that should you get pulled over/searched it cannot possibly be construed as a loaded firearm.

Exactly. Even a loaded mag/speed-loader taped to the gun is not a loaded gun, it has to be in the mag-well, or cylinder or it's not a loaded gun.

Good to know for sure that locked zippers are legit in the eyes of the law. I've always assumed so, but usually transport in a Pelican case (One lock with a bunch of pistols inside vs. a bunch of locks on all the individual cases) so never really bothered to look into it.

Man, I am so glad to hear that. Have been locking ammo separate from gun which is also locked and it is a PITA!!! Cool to be able to load your mags and keep in the same locked container... Have been using Pelicans also, and they ain't cheap!!

After reading the open carry threads, where gun in holster and loaded mag next to it is legal, have always wondered about this.
