In my limited (2-300 rounds) experience, at close range, big dot covers a lot of the target. Out past 10-15 feet, it's OK, but if you're interested in precision, a big dot might not be what you want.

If 'minute of bad-guy' is OK, big dots seem to be suitable.

Better shots than I likely do better - which means lots of people!

I have only used them on the Saiga shotguns but I prefer the big dot for that application. But of course, that's at fairly short range and a great deal of precision is not really necessary.

I would suggest standard dot size. I had a big dot set on my Kimber 1911, and while it was great for picking up targets very quickly, it was not suitable for precision work out to 25 yards. Get the new 24/7 set.

My .02 worth for you.....

A lot of it depends on what you're using the pistol for. If you're planning on using it for CCW purposes or for other defensive use, I would recommend using the XS 24/7 BigDot on smaller handguns, such as the G19 or the G26. Full-sized guns, such as my G20 get the standard-sized XS 24/7 sights.

My reasoning is this..... Compact & subcompact size handguns used primarily for defensive purposes aren't normally going to be shooting at long ranges (ie- 25yds+). The XS 24/7 BigDot sights are fast to pick up when you need to get a shot off, especially at closer ranges. I've had no problems out to 25yds with my G19 and my G29, both of which are wearing BigDots.

If you're running a full-sized pistol, such as a G20, the regular XS 24/7 dots will work fine for close in stuff (ie- under 25yds) and will still allow you to accurately shoot further if necessary. I've heard folks say that sight acquisition isn't as fast as with the BigDots but in all reality I can't tell any difference. Acquire target, dot the "i", press..... repeat as necessary.

If the pistol is just going to be a range gun and not see any use as a CCW or home-defense handgun, then I'd say to not get the BigDots and just go with the regular XS 24/7 sights.

Another little side-benefit with XS sights for Glocks is that they're a snap to install, no sight press needed if you're replacing the stock sights. All you need is a light mallet to drive out the rear sights and a set of pliers or a Gerber multi-tool to remove the front sight, everything else needed for installation is provided with the XS sights.

And I'll agree with Tony on the shotgun + BigDot combo. That's the best way to go, IMO.
