So putting one of these kits on a 1911, Glock, or whatever would make it an unregistered Short Barreled Rifle (SBR)?

It'd fall under fed and state SBR, and state AW.

the kit does not come with the buttstock, i believe it is listed as an accessory..

so its pretty much legal. til you add the buttstock, then you'd need a 16" barrel.

Minus the VFG, wouldn't it still classify as a barrel shroud??

                Humor me this...

Pictured above without the stcok and VFG, can we use that system to import a NRF?
The 1911 NRF would be assembled into that chassis with a longer barrel if needed to meet the 10" length for a single shot pistol. A magazine would be locked in place with a sled to only feed one (1) round via the chamber.

                Legal, Right???

                  No NRF'ing involved. Just a single-shot dimensionally-compliant roster-exempt 1911 pistol

FYI, Sarco has 7" barrels for only like $60.

Has anyone does this for a 1911 and made it CA compliant? If so, how?

This thread and the posts from 2009, reflect what was CA legal back then, primarily "bullet button" style devices and SSE.

AFAIK, post-2017, unless they were registered as a "bullet button" assault weapon, no one has utilized it in a CA legal manner.

Use of that kit, makes an illegal assault weapon under CA laws. [PC 30515(a)(4)(C)]

Pre-2017, it could have been made CA legal utilizing a "bullet button" style device to make it into a semi-auto pistol with a fixed magazine.

Post-2017, "bullet button" style devices are no longer CA legal devices that can make a "fixed magazine" and is considered a type of magazine release for detachable ammunition feeding devices.

In order for it to have a "fixed magazine", the ammunition feeding device needs to be contained in the firearm and can not be removed without disassembling the firearm's action (for 1911 style firearm: slide assembly removed from frame) or it needs to be permanently attached in the firearm's magazine well (for 1911 style firearm: magazine welded/epoxied/riveted into the grip).

                        Therefore...
In order to be CA legal as a semi-auto pistol: a 10 or less round magazine needs to be permanently attached in the grip of the 1911.
In order to be CA legal as a semi-auto centerfire rifle: a 16" or greater length barrel is installed, a grip wrap/fin is installed, a fixed shoulder stock is installed, and it's overall length is 30" or greater.

CA Pistol AW definition relating to the topic:

A semiautomatic pistol that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
                          • A threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer. NA. Just don't use one
                          • A second handgrip. Questionable due to hand guard
                          • A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel that allows the bearer to fire the weapon without burning his or her hand, except a slide that encloses the barrel. Hand guard covers the slide not barrel. No extended barrel
                          • The capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the pistol grip. NA
                          • A semiautomatic pistol with a fixed magazine that has the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds. NA
So as long as the configuration DOES not have a stock. Then the question is will DOJ consider the chassis (shroud) as a second grip? And since the barrel is enclosed 100% in the slide, would DOJ consider the shroud (basically the chassis) around the slide as preventing shooter burning their hand on the barrel?

Here are some definition of grip

So is the Hera chassis a shroud or a second handgrip? Or now an extension of the pistol frame?

One can always argue that with traditional two hand hold of a handgun, the shooter's non-trigger hand also grips the frame of the pistol, does that make the frame of any pistol now a "second handgrip" even tho both hands are griping on the same surface?

Bottom line, these type of pistol chassis' are just not cool enough to justify venturing into the CA legal AW abyss.

People keep forgetting California's prime firearms directive, disarm civilians at all costs. The secondary directive is while the evil overlords in 2022 still have to allow California citizens to bear arms until they figure out how to successfully completely disarm us through tyranny and legal minutiae subterfuge, if it's cool, interesting, out of the ordinary, ban it. Ban it. Ban it.
