    1911 compensators

I have used the search button and all the results I've had have been "where do I find one" My question is are they legal to own in CA? reason why I ask is alot of sellers wont ship them to CA. The comp I had in mind were the barrel bushing ones that DONT require a threaded barrel. I know that the .45acp is a lower pressure round and the benifits if any would be very small. This will be for looks ONLY, I have 2 1911's I keep one bone stock and the other I upgrade and play around/tinker with.

this is what I had in mind

The barrel bushing models are legal and even in 45 acp the comps do work to reduce muzzle climb and recoil.

There's a problem that's common with the bushing type comps - the ones that I've looked at will peen the lug that engages the slide cuts. Eventually, you have to use a vise and a wrench to get the thing off, and at that point you have to use a swiss file to clean up the lug if you want to continue to use it.

            My advice?

Forget about putting anything on your pistols "for looks."
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

              I have one of these:

Bought it years ago, back then it includes a spring and spring guide rod that supposedly absorbs recoil.

All compensators are legal to own in California....provided,
A threaded barrel with a thread on comp is still legal IF it is permanently
attached to the barrel through welding, etc. Bushing comps are no problem. However, bushing comps do not work as compensators per say. While they might vent the gases, they do so minimally by being attached to the slide and not the barrel. They do increase muzzle weight allowing less muzzle rise. Thereby compensating muzzle rise. If you're going to put one on may I suggest...
For looks the Wilson Combat. Clean lines and a nicer blend to the slide.
For weight the EFK Fire Dragon. Doesn't blend as well to the slide, but is a nice, heavy, solid chunk of metal on the front.

Watch the begining of this video. The first part is a compensator that's attached to the barrel on a 1911 and you'll immidiately understand why they work better compared to the bushing type.

                    Agreed on the recoil factor.
However, when shooting lead loads, eventually the comp traps and blasts sticky crud onto the barrel, which then jams up the bushing / slide action.

Also agreed on the lug peening problem...I had this too...the company replaced the frst one for free, then the second one did it too.

For CA, I would get the Fire Dragon extended ported barrel instead.
