i am not sure if this is the right place for this question, but here goes. in california, can i carry a handgun in my car if it is in a safe? if so can it be locked and loaded?

Just to add to your question...Can the safe be a hidden compartment or inside of a hidden compartment to avoid theft? I think I recall something banning this. I know the glove box and center console don't count as locked storage.

The locked trunk is defined as a lock box therefore you can still have the gun & loaded mags inside the trunk, but still the gun has to be unloaded(the mags can be loaded, but unattached to the gun)...

Someone said this was not a legal way to transport your handgun. Why is that? While I can see that a standard glove box or center console that locks would not be enough, why would this be any different than having an aftermarket lock box under your seat? This would seem like an ideal way to transport, if it were legal.

Yea, this is not legal. You are in California where counter-culture is mainstream. So, old-school mainstream is now counter-culture.
It is the the way the code is written - there are several lengthy threads about this. You can read the code and see how it is detailed just enough to get you in trouble if you have a gun in a locked box inside a glove box, console, or utility box. Those locations are clearly stated as if everyone knows what they are.
So, get a locking gun box that fits under your seat. Tether it to your seat frame. Keep the gun unloaded. Good to go.

so i think a question was answered and another was raised. i was gonna get a digital pistol safe and mount it behind my seats (extra cab pickup). it would be clearly visible from the window, but attached to the vehicle from the inside of the box so it couldnt be moved. legal or no???

I think containers bolted to a car are a gray area. That could be construed as a utility box (or a glove box, if you keep gloves in it). It would be up to the LEO whether you get called on it, and up to the DA to decide whether to prosecute. But they're here to serve and protect so you should be fine .
