The cool part about buying a Ruger is that you're not just saving money, you're also getting a fundamentally tougher gun that's easier to work on.
Maybe not quite as refined in some aspects, but it's not "lesser" by any means. You can damned well trust your life to a Ruger - in some cases, moreso than an S&W. See the post I did on that TFL thread I linked to... for starters, under harsh conditions Rugers are designed to be field-stripped where S&Ws aren't.
