    COLT COMMANDER 9MM

I know this may sound dumb but would a 45 cal mag, like the 10 round Chip McCormick fit the Commander in 9MM?

No, the feed lips are too wide for the 9mm round. It would physically fit in the pistol frame, but not function properly.

I like the Wilson ETM magazines for my 9mm Colt Commander since the plastic follower won't chew up my alloy frame.

I'm pretty sure an unloaded .45 cal magazine will fit into a commander 9mm frame. I'll check when I get home.

Magwells don't change between .45 and 9mm, so yes.

Ah so Redcliff, you do have a Commander in 9MM huh? I inherited one from un uncle but its in the Philippines, and since another relative is asking for some 10 rounder Chip McCormick 45 mags, I thought of getting an extra for myself.
But if there going to be reliability issues then I might as well find one that's designed for the 9MM.
By the way, Midway has a special for 10 rounder McCormick for like $22.99.

Just to clarify, you won't be able to run .45 ACP magazines in a 9mm gun. The rounds will not stay in the magazine.

However, you can run 10 round 9mm magazines, Tripp Research will be the ones to go with.

Yes I have a early 50's vintage Colt Commander in 9mm and it's one of my favorite pistols. I hope you're able to get your pistol imported to you.

Definitely get magazines designed specifically for the 9mm 1911. My Wilson ETM's have been flawless in both my Colt and my Kimber 9mm 1911's. 1911 metal magazine followers can rock in most designs and contact the feed ramp area... so I like using the plastic follower Wilson ETM's to prevent damage; due to their design they don't contact the alloy grip frame.

Tripps are supposed to be great 1911 magazines but I stick to my Wilson ETM's on alloy frame pistols.

Sorry Redcliff, forgot to asked. Are you using the standard 7 rounds or the 10 rounders? I just kinda leaning towards the McCormick since theirs come with mag grip extender, I have'nt check if Wilson's has it too.

A standard (7 or 8rd) .45 mag is a 9 or 10rd 9mm mag. You won't be able to buy new mags that hold more than 10rds, so just use the 10's - which fit the magwell.

                    I use Tripp 10's, Mec-Gar 9's, and original Colts.

The Wilson ETM 9mm magazines I use are 10 rounders. They have a magazine bumper on the bottom also as part of the floorplate.

Hey Redcliff - the only part of the pistol that the follower contacts is the slide stop - a metal follower doesn't increase wear on the frame or anything other than the stop.
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

                          Don't be to sure

Stephen Camp has some photos and discusses it on this page: http://www.hipowersandhandguns.com/L...ht%201911s.htm about half-way down.

This was also a well-known issue on some of the Kimber alloy framed pistols. Apparently on a magazine with an "unsupported" follower the last round can drag it forward and gouge the frame. My Ultra CDP II had some marks and I subsequently switched to Wilson mags.

                            This one's a '51. For the range I use the Tripp 10 rounders - they're terrific.
