    AR15 Pistol

Hello there, I am thinking about building an AR15 pistol. What are the legalities on this? I know I would need an OLL Pistol Marked Lower but am not sure beyond that. SEAN

Easiest way is to purchase one built with a maglock and sled in the magazine well. PRK Arms usually has them in stock.

Anvil Arms has pre-built lowers set up for California. You just need to find a dealer in your area willing to bring it in.

the lower does not need to be pistol marked. It just needs to a be a virgin receiver (or never built as a rifle etc, etc.)

And it MUST be DROSed as a pistol. Not a long gun.

So once I get a Pistol marked receiver drosed as a pistol I just need to get a pistol upper kit, bullet button and 10 rd mag? SEAN

This all sounds well except for the fact that pistol lowers aren't on the approved list of handguns.

To get a bare pistol receiver, you either have to PPT from an owner that DROS'ed as pistol or be law enforcement officer. If neither is case and it's a new build, it has to be sent in single shot format from manufacturer, i.e. Anvil Arms.

I could be wrong but as far as I knew the DROS has no bearing on whether a firearm is a rifle, pistol, receiver, shotgun, AOW, or other such as a 1919, with the exception a pistol DROS allows for registration. It may work differently for CA but I thought as long as it is a virgin receiver from the factory and it is marked as "other" on the 4473 it is eligible to be built as a pistol or rifle which ever the owner chooses.

When ordering something in Pistol format, does it have to be a total, and complete, fire able weapon (i.e. complete upper, complete bolt, complete lower, buffer, sled, mag lock, etc.)? Or can you just get the lower with mag lock and sled?

If sent as a single shot, then it has to remain a single shot and cannot be converted to a 10 rd mag with a lock on the mag? This where I am getting conflicting advice from people. Thanks SEAN

Here's the deal. It's sent and DROS'ed as single shot to go around the handgun roster crap. Once it's out of DROS you can remove the sled and place a 10 round magazine in it, thus making it semi auto. The mag lock must remain.

Gotcha! Thanks! When sent, does it need to be complete or sled and mag lock on the lower will suffice? SEAN

Shane916 is correct. Single shot is to bypass the CA DOJ's safe gun roster. It has to have maglock with ten round or less magazines at all times in Cali.

There's no such thing a featureless AR/AK pistol in Cali, since having the magazine well outside the pistol grip is a banned feature.

Hopefully once incorporation happens, and roster is nullified, we can buy bare receivers, DROS them as pistols and make them Cali-compliant. Until then, single shot, fully assembled sent to FFL is the way to go.
