    460 owners, question.

I have a 8 3/8 bbl 460 I bought new, a couple few years ago when I first got it I shot factory ammo when I could afford it, then switched to Reloading. I tend to run on the hot side, More because I just love shooting the beast. I put about 75 rnds through it this weekend and got my second double shot "bump fire" from it, Thats pretty scarry. The first was a trip earlier this year. Anyway, I was checking out the bbl and it seams there is no rifling about 1 1/2" into the bbl. Is this how its supposed to be or have I worn down my rifling that bad? Hoping someone could check theirs out and confirm or deny what i'm seeing. I have maybe 7 to 800 down the tube. I have heard about premature throat errosion but I thought that was more in the cylinder barrell gap that errodes. any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

I was watching a T V show recently, I think it was "Guns and Gear". They said it was designed this way but I can't remember the reason. Under 1,000 rounds is unheard of for throat erosion. I would contact S&W.

I just checked my 460V 5" and the rifling looks just as you described. I think you should be okay.

The question is not "How far?". The question is "Do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far as is needed?". - Il Duce/Prisoner#6570534 from Boondock Saints

It's called "gain twist rifling." See link for more information

thanks for all the replies, and good to know my barrell is ok. i'm going to lighten up on my loades, slamming the ejector rod on the tailgate or table to extract expanded cases, is probably a little too hot.

I have been reloading for over 2 decades now and sadly in my younger years I was much like you until I ruined a perfectly fine Colt Lawman. More is not always better especially in a magmun! Please use good judgment when reloading, for your safety and others.
