Small pistol vs small rifle primers

Dimensionally they are interchangeable (NOT true for Large Primers). But before you do that, you should always work up loads, NEVER just swap primers. The rifle primer has a thicker/harder cup than pistol primers which could result in misfires. Additionally, if the pressures aren't high enough you could get gas leakage around the rifle primer (not enough pressure to expand the primer tight around the pocket) which over time could cause breechface erosion (not too unusual for 38Super raceguns).Luck favors the prepared.

i thought small rifle was slightly longer, requiring a deeper pocket as well. I could be wrong though. IIRC it was about .005" Not sure though. They are definitely hotter though.Comment

Sounds like bottom line, don't swap primers.
