    I got a MkIII Ruger....

So back in summer of '07 I did a deal with Ivan where he got a very nice Colt lightweight Cobra and I got a Mk III target.

I added a red dot and have shot the crap out of it including in a pistol league I belong to. I love the gun!

But I have grown to absolutely despise the curse word festival that is known as reassembly after cleaning!

What in the hell am I doing wrong? I've read the instruction manual until my eyes bleed and still fight with it.

    WTF?

Gotta make sure that the hammer is all the way forward before puttin in the mainspring even if you think its all the way forward, trust me, its not.

well, it's a mk2... but same general idea.

apparently you just have to the magical angle to hold it at, comes somewhere between picking it up and throwing it against the wall in frustration.

In the list of related videos at the bottom of the snapshot, scroll to the left a bit and there's a 2-part for the Mark-III. Part 2 is reassembly, and he goes slowly. I didn't watch it with the sound up, but he messes with the hammer and inserts and removes the mag a couple of times before replacing the bolt lock/backstrap.

The solution to this problem is not cleaning it.

              here is what I do:

1: with the lower, insert EMPTY magazine, lower hammer
              2: remove magazine
              3: fit upper on.
              4: put in the bolt
              5: insert EMPTY mag
6: use a took pick, while pulling the trigger, poke the hammer so it falls completely forward, remove magazine
7: insert the main spring housing all the way up whiling keeping the rotating bit all the way to the back
8: then tilt the gun back and allow the hammer strut to fall onto the round spot on the rotating section of the MSH
9: close the MSH and flip the lever shut.

tip: when performing step 9, you should be able to feel tension on the rotating section of the MSH and as you close the portion on the back of the grip while closing the lever, it should be a very noticeable bias to close. otherwise you are doing it wrong.

Are the procedures for Mk2 and Mk3 the same?

                    Here is another video.

I was actually afraid to buy one because of what I had heard about it and I'm not mechanically inclined at all. I ended up buying one (fluted 6 7/8" barrel Hunter) finally.

I found a good video and between that and the manual, it took me about 1/2 the first time. I even went out and bought the nylon/rubber ended hammer the guy suggested. Now, I can do it in a few minutes and it's no big deal.

The video I had used (A member here posted it in a thread) is no longer available, but the link above is a new one I found. The guy talks too much at the beginning, but his instructions are easy to understand. He does say, when it's apart that it is now in 5 pieces, but he, for an unknown reason to me, is counting the empty mag as one. The gun itself as you know is only 4 main pieces for the field strip. The important part in reassembly is ensuring the correct position of the hammer.

If I can do it, anyone can do it. Good luck.

ETA: I had to correct the size of the barrel. I couldn't believe I put 6 6/7".

I know this pistol is supposed to be supremely accurate, but is it really any good for anything other than competition shooting? it looks like that's all it was made for, and the results seem to back it up, but how about everyday use or use without a scope? (by everyday use i mean use in the same manner that you might use your other handguns when at the range.....ie, fast shooting, defensive practice, etc.)

So easy once you learn this one little part inside the gun that has to hook on, I always turn it upside down and wait to hear that little part hook on.

So basically my little tip is turn the gun upside down in a swining motion and you should hear when that one little part hooks on.

EDIT: in the first video from "ac427cpe" you can see how he holds the gun at an angle that is where the little part hooks on, that is one of the most important parts to learn once you have that down you are set. I don't do it his way though I turn it upside down in a swinging motion works for me... but his way does work for me also. I just got use to the turning it upside down.

once you figure out where the trigger resets, double taps are easier than shooting BB guns.

I dunno about supremely accurate though. It has its limitations. At 25 yards it is fantastic but at 50...you have to figure out the ammo to avoid opening up the groups.

Years ago I bought a "used" MkII Ruger from a San Bernardino Sheriff. He had NEVER cleaned it. He told me it did not work anymore (duh!).

Well, I got it cheap ($150 out the door). I went home and took it COMPLETELY apart. I mean every friggen part. I cleaned everything back to new condition, and then spent two weeks getting it back together. %*#@! WTF...

Holy sh*t, what a pain in the ash that was. Now I know why he never cleaned it. Because of that Ruger, I am now a recovering alcoholic.......

One thing is for sure, if I EVER have to do it again, I know how to do it. The images have been permanently burned into my subconscious.

Over the years, I have owned, and cleaned, perhaps 400-800 assorted weapons. I find most weapons very easy to break down and reassemble. The only two weapons that gave me heartburn was the Ruger MKII, and the Ithaca Model 37 (you DO NOT want to take an Ithaca pump completely apart, unless you you have really strong drugs).
