Glock "Frame Upgrade"

Well I happen to have a Gen 3 Glock 19 with an ERTXXX serial number. Well I knew about Glock's "frame upgrade" on certain batches because of rear rails breaking. I never got around to sending the gun to them, but am thinking about doing so now.

From my understanding the replaced frame has the same serial # but with a "1" added at the end. By doing this the gun is no longer the "same" and has to be sent to an FFL.

My question is do I need to Re-DROS the gun and treat the transaction as if I had just purchased a new Glock? Is there some sort of exemption code that they can enter in the DROS?

You need to re-DROS since it's a new serial number.

I would think Glock can answer the question. If you send the gun and they send it back to you I'd call it good. If they send it back to and FFL, well there you go.

Yes, it needs to be re-DROSed. Yes, you get a 1-per-30 day exemption for "warranty replacement." Make sure your dealer enters this if you buy handguns frequently. I had 8 Glocks that needed to go through this, needless to say I was not happy that I would not be able to buy handguns for the next year. Luckily, DOJ told me via email that the dealer can enter these replacements as a 30 day exemption, so they were all DROSed at once.

Did you send your whole gun or just the frame? Also did they do any other work besides the frame replacement.

I called Glock this morning and the rep told me that they wouldn't pay for my shipping back to them. He said that this was a voluntary upgrade and that was the reason they didnt pay shipping both ways.

Did they do any extra work on your guns (ie: new springs, slide refinish) or throw in anything extra for your hassles?

Glock told me that I needed to send the entire guns to them because they could not mail "frames" back to CA since frames are not approved, entire handguns are. Make sure you remove anything non-stock or else Glocks takes it for themselves.

Glock did reimburse my FFL for shipping, because I made a stink about it, and also because I returned the frames during the "height" of the recall back in 2003. Glock was trying to overcome their bad rep back then, but now they probably think no one even remembers the "recall," so they don't really care.

Oh yeah, ask them if it is an "upgrade" and not a "recall" then why did they only inform LE agencies back in 2003? Maybe because the problem would cause the gun to fail in a gunfight, no big deal for civilians I guess.

p.s. Nothing was done to my guns other than replacement of the frames. I sold all but one of the replaced guns because of my disgust (but I still bought other Glocks).

I had one of these, bought and resold here at calguns. It had a 1 added to the beginning of the SN - 1ESU4XX.

They didn't change the SN on the non-controlled parts - just on the frame.

I've never owned a Glock in my life. I have broken 3:

1) Range rental, shot 300 rounds through it, midway through the 300's the front takedown spring and lever broke and the slide sorta flew halfway off the frame.

2) Friends pistol. Have had about 2000 rounds through it, exact same thing happened, slide did not flew off, round was chambered, I pulled the trigger and the thing sort of combotulated in my hand. Though no serious damage was done and I had no injuries, it was a real scare.

3) Same friend, shooting his G36, the pistol was new, I was putting through it's second 500 rounds that day. The rear portion of the frame broke clean off as the slide returned to battery and it sorta slump in my hands.

My friend was stunned as he has touted the reliability of Glocks forever. This all happened during a span of about 2 months so I don't think it was 3 times the coincidence. I've since have not shot a Glock and frankly speaking I don't doubt I'll break another one if I did. All the while Glock was quietly "replacing" all the frames. For a company with such touted reliability claims I am dismayed that they never made the problems full view to the public and have only really solved the problem on the recent pistols. I have seen the new series of Glocks and am glad they seem to have beefed up the frame and the front take down spring/lever area.

I have been contemplating picking up a few G17's as SHTF handouts to family members. But everytime I go and look at one the same series of events haunt my decision making. It's been 2 years since those incidents and I have yet to forget them.
