First handgun -- needs a locking case

    Hi:

Well I went and did it, bought my first handgun! A Ruger MkIII Hunter SS with 6.88" bbl. I always wanted one of these, mainly because I love the looks. But it's also for what I want to do, which is punch paper and plink. Later I will get a HD/SD handgun, but I'm starting out with a fun gun.

Now I have to wait 10 days...

Which gives me time for a very important task: I need to get a locking pistol case suitable for the 7" barrel.

    Got any recommendations?

    Thanks for input!

sooo many different cases out there. I personally use a SKB, similar to a Pelican.

IF your in OC, don't forget the show after Turkey day while our wives are out shopping
A few booths there will have some cases.
If your in this area, electronic store named (corner of orangethorpe & raymond) had cases. Metal with nice foam inserts. Bought one last year for ~$20.00. Nice case for the $ and lockable.
Now if I could remember the name of the store, getting old
      Google maps will find it.
      Orvac electronics, love google maps.

There are definitely a lot out there. Is it just for transporting it around or securing it inside the home, maybe with quick access?

For transport, I would highly recommend a Pelican w/ foam. They are a bit more expensive but the quality is great and it'll really protect your gun. I'm completely satisfied.

I like hard cases too, but went with a soft case for range transport, with a dinky combo lock so that I have less weight to carry. For more serious transport hard case all the way.

SKB is nice, I have a large pelican as well and the only issue I have is that it does not balance well when standing upright so I'm always knocking it over. That and I still have not figured out how to cut the foam properly.

For now all I care about is transporting legally.

You can use a paper bag.

Legally, you can say that the 22 can't punch its way out of a paper bag.

J/K. cheaper than dirt has a boat load of cases. Just buy a cheap one and buy a luggage lock from Walmart.

The trunk of your vehicle is considered a locked container in itself, so you could transport it in there unloaded in some kind of case without a lock even. But, I would still get a decent case with some kind of combination lock you can quickly open.

Edit: Sorry, I somehow assumed you meant transport in a vehicle...but now I realize that might not be the case. My vote still goes to Pelican.

Not too sure if this will fit your pistol, but how about the Glock Security Case? I plan on getting one.

                  As seen here: http://www.glock.com/english/safetypack_case.htm

walmart has a "four" gun locking case that comes with an extra "padded zip locking" case for $20. It's a good case with multiple uses, and at the end of the day, you could transport 5 guns for $20. not bad.

What you need is a range bag, the ones with zipper loops for the handgun pocket so you can put a small padlock. You can put your eyes, ears, ammo, tools, and what not in it too.

I have the exact gun you have and it fits on the range bag below:

Just for picking the gun up upon release from 10 day gun jail? Just use a backpack that you can padlock the zipper loops together. Then you can shop at your own leisure to get whichever case you prefer.

LOL a Pelican for a MkIII... I think the case would cost more than the gun!!!

Most drug stores have cheap handgun cases in the sporting goods section. You're looking at about $15 for a Plano Gun Guard, maybe less. I have several- if you're not planning on running it over with a Mack truck then it's all you need! I find these at Longs, CVS, Wal-Mart, etc...

To get it from your front door to the trunk, the handgun has to be open carried, if legal (not in a school zone), or cased and locked. Strictly speaking.

Check with your fun store. If this is a new Ruger, it should be coming in a plastic case which is lockable. You shouldn't need to worry about shopping for second case.
