    Glock frame replacement?

What is the California legality of this? I have an old G17 and would like to take advantage of the frame replacement programs offered by some Glock vendors to swap out old for new.

The Glock 17 is on the roster, so you buy a new frame from Glock under their frame replacement program, then do the DROS at your FFL. At least that's what I did about 3 years ago.

Can you imagine if Glock added a dash for each time they made a change to their pistol? That's just a smart way of doing things.

Yeah, I'm glad Glock doesn't do that like S&W.

The replacement programs I'm referring to, including Glocks, require you send your old frame in, they switch serial number plates and apply the old plate to a new frame, then send it directly to you. No need for an FFL, at least on a federal level.

What does CA say about this type of transaction?

i dont think they give you a gun with the same serial it will have a new plate with your number with a star

please let me know if you have proof that glock will actually rip the old metal chunk off your dust cover and remold a gun around it

other wise unless you want to pay an ffl a bunch of money

ship it in from a free state and they will ship it straight back to your house in that free state

I'm getting bit off topic from OP, but what I'm afraid is this whole 2010 "4th Gen" thing. It's the first time Glock officially use the term Generation (not counting SF, RTF). I hope Glock won't go on the same step as S&W.

This has been talked about. The 4th Gen Glock is going to be a all new frame with removable palm grips, There is also supposed to be a modification to the barrel lug area.

This gun will not make it on the roster, just as the picatinny rail version of the G21 could not make the roster. They will allow texture changes, but not a whole new design, and since their is no indication that Glock is adding a mag disconnect or what I consider the bigger hurdle an LCI that meets the new requirements. It's almost a given the 3rd gen RTF frames are the last "new" Glocks that California will be getting, until the roster is struck down, but realistically that could be a long long time away.

If the frame is being replaced due to factory recall, the serial number will be the same as the old frame.

If the frame is being sent in for an "upgrade", the serial number will be different.

In other states (like AZ & NV), you can ship direct to Glock and they ship it back to you (No FFL required).
Not sure of the procedure for CA.
CA law allows you to ship & recieve a firearm from a manufacturer/gunsmith for repairs (No FFL required). But, since the new frame will have different serial numbers, not sure if it has to be sent to a CA FFL dealer and be DROS'd back to you.

Why don't you contact Glock directly to find out what their policy is for the PRK. And let us know what you find out. I have a bunch of them from the early 1990s that I would love to upgrade. All except the first one, which is the first gun I ever bought. I wouldn't trade that one in for anything.

Glock no longer replaces frames with the same serial number if the original frame is damaged beyond repair. The BATF stopped them from doing that. If the frame falls under Glock's frame rail "upgrade", the serial number will be the same except for the number "1" added as a prefix.

In both instances, Glock would have to have the frame sent to an FFL and you'd have DROS as if it was a new handgun.

If you had a really old Glock, you can send in the frame and have any internal parts upgraded and have the frame shipped directly back to you, no FFL needed.

But you should contact Glock with any questions, or to verify if your Glock needs any upgrading.
