recoil spring jammed. can't rack slide

hey guys, I got an M&P45. Last night I chambered a round and now I can't rack the slide to eject the round. The action is closed and the recoil spring guide is protruding about 1/4". When I go to pull the slide back it will only move about 1/8". If I slam the gun on the floor the spring guide will go back in but when I try to rack the slide it comes back out.

the round is Magtech hollow point 45 ACP.

anyone got ideas on how to fix this or what went wrong?

Please don't slam your gun on the floor with a live round in the chamber!!

I wish I could help, but I don't have an M&P .45acp, and have never seen this problem.

    Be careful...

First off, dont slam your gun on the ground. Secondly call Springfield their customer service is top notch.

Dont take offense to this, how new or used is the gun? How many rounds through it since you cleaned it last and if you just cleaned it are you sure you put it back togethor correctly? Ive never handled the M&P so no idea if its basic like a Glock or Sig with disassembly or you gotta be a mechanic like on a 1911 or P250.

it's had about 1000 rounds put through it. other than this incident it is in great shape. I clean it after every range trip so it is currently clean. disassembly is very similar to glock. the recoil spring and guide is fixed together.

Or a local gunsmith, range guys who arent gunsmiths tend to think they are just one step below and may try stuff they shouldnt and break something. People are definately not as careful with other peoples stuff. Gunsmiths are very knowledgeable and want to gain a customer plus their reputation is on the line.

I agree it's a good idea to contact Smith & Wesson. I just got my M&P 45 back for an issue where it would lock open (as if empty) with about half a magazine remaining. Free shipping both ways, slide stop replaced at no charge. About a 2 week turn-around including shipping time both ways from CA to east coast.

Another issue that hasn't been brought up: If you move the gun off your property you may run into some legal issues regarding transporting a loaded firearm. Also, you won't be able to ship a loaded firearm. Definitely seems like a "wait and call" situation to me.

Go to the range, keep pointed down range and get rid of that round.

Then lock slide back, pull down the take down, pull down that thingy on the magazine disconnect area and push the slide forward. Remove BROKEN recoil spring or place spring correctly onto spring hole on slide and barrel lug.

Bah I was thinking Springfield because I just read the EMP thread. I can tell you first hand Smith is awesome. I called about a feed issue with my SW1911, they paid for the shipping both directions, was fast and I have never had an issue with my gun again. Sorry about the whole Springfield S&W mix up. Either way the advice still stands.

Are you sure it's actually a jammed recoil assembly? Most jams of this type are due to a bulged case that's been forced into the chamber and your difficulty is getting that round out. In a safe area and only if you are comfortable with this, you can try gently pulling the extractor lip from off of the case rim, then drawing the slide rearward -- this can be a little tricky but should work. You'll be able to then disassemble the gun with the round in the barrel and use a squib rod to push it out.

For safety's sake if you can draw the 1/8" open enough to see the gap between the cartridge primer and the firing pin find something to slip in there - the stiffest/hardest something that will fit, it's to block the firing pin if it should somehow release and fly forward. I would do this first before any more messing around, keep that pin from hitting the primer. Even if you'll do nothing else and take it to a gunsmith, try and get this done.

+1 on this assessment. I've seen and have personally had this happen to me before.

maybe this will help, hold your gun then the upper slide where the sight is close to the barrel drive it down against a wood bench outside your house or back of your house all youre force push it dowm maybe this will help to re track the slide back and hopefully the ejector hold the live round and pull it out the chamber it happend to me on my 1911 .45 i was able to pull the ammo out, my case was reload ammo case expanded
